V12 XJS

Hi guys,

A friend of mine has bought a 1989 convrtible V12 XJS, its Right hand drive, but he wants to convert it to LHD to use down in Spain.

Has anyone had experience of such a job, or knows anyone thats carried out this conversion ? i would imagine its a pretty complicated conversion, maybe someone could point me in the right direction of someone who specialises in this kind of thing.

Can't help thinking that he will be better off sourcing a LHD car. If he's determined KWE seem to be the people or restoring/modifying these.

I'm betting that he'll change his mind if he ever manages to find someone to quote on that.

Seriously, probably thousands of pounds to do a decent conversion, probably as much as the car is worth!

Why go to all the bother of changing it? Apart from overtaking when driving alone it doesn't make much difference which side the steering wheel is on. In fact some people say, and I wouldn't disagree, that sitting on the nearside helps you place a wide car more easily when driving on narrow roads.

I have to say as someone who likes a challenge,that the idea sounds unrealistic from a financial point of view. That would need both cars and a substantial deposit on account before commencement, in case the client goes cold when the true horror of all the pitfalls becomes real. It would be so much cheaper to simply sell, and buy the correct car.

I'd have thought there would be far more LHD convertible XJS's in good condition than RHD ones. Isn't rust these beauties biggest enemy?

Probably about three or four times as much as the car is worth.

There is a ropey looking old XJS in the June Anglia Classic Auction next weekend that is LHD although it is a fixed head - would be a good source of parts but I can't imagine this is anything but easy or even worthwhile.

The expensive but far more sensible choice would be to sell the RHD and buy a LHD if he is that bothered - nice looking one here - for £14,000!
