Advertised my car on Gumtree today, within 2 hours I had 2 texts that were clearly scams.

One claimed that they saw my exact car advertised for a much lower price and I should click the link they sent to 'check it out'.

Another wanted me to email them from my personal email.

And then about 2 hours later, I got a text saying that the text with the link was a scam and they were trying to 'steal my money' and that I should report it to the police.

This is the first time I've advertised a car, does this happen to everybody or am I just unlucky? banghead

There's always scams, even on piston heads classified.
Not seen that though

I put my Rover 75 shed up on here last week and within a couple of hours got an email that I was suspicious about from the start, sure enough it went down the shipping agent/paypal payment route. Janet O'Connor was the 'interested' party!

Had the gumtree one recently. I had ONLY advertised on PH and got a call from someone about the car and they told me of my car being on Gumtree for 5k less. I checked and there it was, thy had taken my pics and cut and pasted half (?) of my blurb. Emailed Gumtree and it was removed an hour later. Not sure what they hoped to achieve by trying to sell a ar they didn't own.

Seems to be high performance cars in particular that the scammers target.

Hm, they must make exceptions if they target performance cars, I'm selling a 1.0 Yaris!

I will have to have a search on gumtree and check that there isn't a duplicate ad. Thanks.
