Simply trying to avoid another PITA situation by using 2 bays. Those totally careless/inconsiderate b****rds who open their doors bang into the the neighbouring car.
A while back, I saw at a distance in an hotel car park the driver of an ordinary family car standing outside her car, leaning in to retrieve something while her ample rear quarters repeatedly bumped her door into the very shiny side of a particularly expensive looking Porsche. If I was closer, words would have been exchanged....
The thing is, 2 bay parkers might attract attention from self-appointed, unofficial "parking attendants" who may feel compelled to hand-out summary punishment and damage someone's pride & joy.
Expensive or sports cars don't usually have horizontal plastic/rubber protective strips.

Have to agree with last poster ....the number of times you come back to your car and some one has parked so close you cannot get the door open especially in the Porsche or any 2 door car for that matter do people not realise you need extra room to swing the door out .
I have Yeti and some one parked last week so close to me I have no idea how they got out their car .It is also inconsiderate to take up 2 spaces as well but we have all dome it at some point ,I never park next to a car that has child seats in it or one of those large people carriers and 4x4 always try to get an end bay at least one side is protected .

Sorry but I'm with the Z4 driver - I do exactly the same in my car if I can't find a space at the furthest corner of Silverburn or anywhere else.
I don't do it out of ignorance or arrogance or anything like that - having had previous cars that have been dented by morons who don't give a $hit parking next to me, I've resorted to the above to avoid forking out ££££ on dent removal or worst case scenarios, partial resprays.

When I park my car I always do so in the furthest away space and usually try and at least have one side protected against a kerb etc. That way it minimises the possibility of dings etc but they might still happen.
However if the car park was busy or potentially going to get busy, I would not have the arrogance to take two spaces because I feel my car is more valuable than anyone else's. In fact I would be sorely tempted that if I saw someone parked like the photo, to also take up two spaces and park door handle to door handle with them.
If your piece of metal is too precious to get a ding or whatever, then don't take it near a car park. The £500 banger in the car park could be just as precious to its owner as the one who has spent tens of thousands.

It's not often I post, more of a lurker than a poster but I couldn't help myself after reading this. Saying someone is arrogant because they "feel their car is more valuable than anyone elses"?? Ok going to an extreme but if someone has an F40, a carrera RS etc, there is no "feel" about it, their car IS more valuable than probably every other car in the car park. Does that mean shouldn't park their car without expecting a ding/scratch/dent? On my last car (R35 GTR which was parked in an end space at an open car park) I had a £5k insurance claim because a t
t in a van clipped the front of the car, scraped the front alloy, front wing and dented the bumper. My wife was sitting in the car at the time and had to chase after him as he didn't stop claiming he never felt the impact! As you can probably tell I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about people denting cars in car parks 
What I am saying is that person with the £500 car, a ding or dent on that may mean as much to them as they person with a car valued at much more.
So when I was 17 and got my first pride and joy a Mk2 Escort, it only cost me £450 and I worked part time and scraped every penny I could get to buy it. I would have been as gutted as you were with your car if someone had damaged it in a car park.
What I am saying is the value of the car is irrelevant. If someone thinks that their car is more important to them and therefore can claim two spaces whereas everyone else is only entitled to one? What if everyone adopted the same approach then we wouldn't have any spaces left?
Owning and driving a car has its risks - that's why you have insurance, now whether its in a car park , or a pothole on the road, or a nail that blows out your tyre, you just need to accept that these things do happen from time to time.
But don't go trying to say that we have a preferential parking system in public car parks whereby your car's value dictates how much space you can take up.

It's not about the value of the car, it's the value to me of my car that matters. It's why i will haul my lazy fat arse a wee bit farther away from the doors of wherever so i can park safely. My Merc is a banger in many people's eyes but i look after it and don't appreciate some fkwits making dings in it.

A friend of mine who used to park taking up two spaces had his car vandalised specifically for doing that (with an explanatory note left on the windscreen). If there are plenty of spaces, park with one space either side of you. Sure, no guarantee of not having someone par next to you but provides some protection. If spaces are likely to be limited, it's a bit selfish to use up two because you think your car is special.

I agree with you about the cars value to an individual, that's why I said an enthusiast with any value of car wouldn't ding someone else car on purpose, it's all the other ignorant/envious pricks in today's society (regardless of how cheap or expensive their cars are) that ding other cars that boil my piss.
I accept that driving a car has risk, accidents on the road, nails etc can happen. Idiot's in car parks however that's something that just shouldn't happen. As such I don't park in any carparks now, just go for hoons in the country
If I had my way every car park would have mandatory security camera's, if they're happy to take the money for parking they should use it for security so that if something did happen any dings could be traced.
