As per title. I am looking for a dead cheap car to insure(5 doors and 5 seats is a must). Any age any engine size, petrol or diesel, just need something that will get me low insurance. I am not fronting, but my dad will be the main driver of the car and me secondary. He has more than 15 years NCB and will drive it more than me. The lowest I have got so far was 4000 pounds, for a 5 door 2004 mercedes 1.8 litre, which strangely was cheaper than a 1987 1.0 litre nissan micra (I thought classic car insurance and the incredibly low value would have helped me here). Please let me know of anything. I really don't care as long as it can fit 5 fairly tall people in. Any tricks to lower the insurance (legal of course, I know things like the pass plus course and fitting a tracker help) would be appreciated. Would love a BMW 316 from the 80s but beggars can't be choosers.

5 door Renault Clio diesel of around 07 vintage or similar 5 door hatch...

I was paying about £800 with just one year NCB for a three door variant.

Best of luck finding something remotely cheap and if you do, don't have an accident. If you do you, you may as well put your licence in the cupboard for a few years and take the bus because the insurance companies won't be kind.

MG3

I have one of these. Top spec (Aircon, parking sensors, cruise control etc), 5 doors. It costs me £270 a year to insure, but I'm 24.

My younger brother has just turned driving age, and there doesn't appear to be many things cheaper to insure.

I'm 6'4 and can sit behind the drivers seat which is set for me.

This is mine...

Qoutes are high for me and not within my budget. It's 1500quid btw. Thanks though. Looks awesome

Is the budget for the insurance or the car? You just said "any age, any engine size" lol

Generally try things that are more unusual. Your standard Micras and Corsas are typical first cars hence the high premiums.

'07 Renault Clio dCi are often as cheap as chips to insure.
We had a '57 plate Clio until last Monday, when we replaced it for a Yeti, but it was super cheap to insure and run.

You can buy a decent high-miler for £3K or thereabouts.

ETA: Just noticed your budget, and it's safe to say you could get some more basic versions for that.

My bad the actual car. Insurance @ 1500 quid for me would be a dream. I don't know why it is so expensive.

Will keep this in mind. My mate has one of these and they are not bad.

A bit of a weird question here but if I tell the insurance company things like I have a guard dog that barks at intruders (I do) and use a steering wheel lock (I will do) will it lower costs? Seeing these are factors that limit the likelihood of a theft and therefore claim?

The steering lock would help probably. Insurance companies like additional security features so probably worth mentioning.

About the guard dog, I'm not sure it makes much difference, as they might be factoring in the time the car would probably spend parked away from home if you go on holiday etc.

The steering lock is something worth mentioning, as having one won't push your premium up, so you've got nothing to lose really.

Not really.

The main issue here is age i.e. lack of experience.

Start weighing up whether or its not worth pursuing additional training / experience for insurance discount - some of it worth it!

Just keep trying different combinations until you strike gold however weird cars can often garner good quotes e.g. I've had friends and family get quotes on old Peugeot 205 Cabriolets that were better than on boring Micra's and the like.

theft isn't the reason 17 year olds have high insurance premiums

Peugeot 406 2.1td bit different but misses is learning to drive adding me to the policy as second driver changed it from 2500 to 600 when she passes her test. Currently around 400 as a learner. Not the worst car in the world to start with.

This ticks all the boxes. Plus if I get one with a bosch pump I can look forward to some 60 pence per litre veg oil instead of diesel. Thank you.

my wife pays £47 per month to have my 18y old son as a driver on a brand new VW up. It was slightly more when he was 17 in a 5 door Kia Venga but not much. I think it helped that my wife owned the car for a few years before he was added.

Excess went from £150 to £400

Even though you aren't fronting, i would still strongly suggest you insure in your name with you as the main driver. Firstly, you will avoid any incorrect accusations of frontibg, and secondly The additional premium will be peanuts compared to the eventual savings from having NCB (providing you dont crash). As an example aged 25 with 7yrs ncb i insured a 300hp v8 engined A8 for 500quid fully comp. The rewards are worth it in the long run.
