Why dont you get it right from the beginning?

Build the entry level car with this peeny-weeny additional 35PS, lower the suspension 15-20mm, stiffen the dampers a bit, put in the smaller diameter steering wheel and the leather gear shifter. And make all this part of the standard spec. Instead of screwing buyers for a 3000-5000 extra cash to get a car in a spec in which it should have been from day one.

911S, Vantage S and so on. These are sports cars anyway to make them sporty because that is what they are supposed to be.

Side effect: Car forums would save lots of storage space on their servers because all the "Make sure you get the "S" version with handles better and has more power" comments would be nonexistant.

Its the perfect reason (if buying new) to not buy the first model year of a new car and wait a bit.

Two reasons:

1. Marketing - To keep people buying a car that's already been on the market for a few years, against newer competition,

2. Development - Over time manufacturers are able to do more testing, research etc. and development based on customer feedback,

But what if someone wants a more comfortable slower model for running/insurance purposes...

Development? If it is so predictable that customer want more power, stiffer suspension and "racing" tat in the interior, then simply slap it on from the beginning, Herr Doktor Ingenieur.

BTW we are talking sports cars here.

So, Porsche, when are you offering a down-tuned soft sprung "comfort" 911 version then? Surprise me.

They do. It's the basic 911.
Not comfort spec per se, but accessible for most types of consumer.

There's a reason why a gt3 costs more...

I've got a V8 Vantage. The V12 isn't worth another £50k+ to me, the V8S is a jittery, bouncy pseudo trackday thing which is confused by its own identity. So my bog standard entry level car is just fine for my needs.

And we are talking "entry level" luxury sports car, right?

So, manufacturer, for a 100k+ car get it right for the base model before offering any "S" upgrades.

And of course, offer the "Sport" version which is so much more money and rarer, and there will be more people lining up to buy it....

So why doesnt Aston offer a limited "John Steed" version of the Vantage?

Or a N289 "racing" version (based on the number of toilets on the 'ring)?

Not everyone can afford, or wants, the 'S' version.

It would help the people who actually build the car if they were all one spec.

Sadly customers are idiots who respond to marketing by paying more money. If they didn't the sales would go to the manufacturer who made the best base car, rather than the one with the most competent marketing department.

They have different engine capacities.

Are you also complaining that Ford sell Mondeos with 1.6 and 2.0 engines? (Not to mention 1.0, 1.5, 1.6D and 2.0D engines.)

There aren't many non-supercars (including high-end sportscars) that don't have options of different capacity engines in the range.

I'm with you! And unlike some, I get that you only mean sports/supercars. Not Mondeos as some retard thinks above!

"S" versions are generally the equivalent of fiddling with a car. Witness the "Type R" NSX with it's lightened gear gaitor. It's just to extend the shelf life of a car when REALLY they should be introducing a newer version.

And that's before we get to P1 and Flemkes issue that all of a sudden the "defiantly no more than 375" original cars will now potentially be joined by a "Track" version?!?!?

I think my turbo s when new cost less than the sum of the extras on a non s. Plus it's an s and therefore faster and better smile

Magic! Good that you picked the "S"! Cheaper than speccing it from scratch!

Well, the GTS would have been better (+17.3 PS, +12.89% torque, 7mm lower, contrast stiching on handbrake lever).

Not to mention the GTS-R (fine-tuned for improved, wait, "handling", stiffer dampers with, well "improved" damping; Alcantara steering wheel with 8mm smaller diameter).

Oh, the GTS-RS (all of the aforementioned PLUS these 3 "limited edition" paint colours - wait: Nordscheife Blue, Sachsenring Yellow, Huschke von Hanstein Brown PLUS the revised front grille inserts, now black powder coat, unless the standard version was black powder coat, then it is chrome now)! Even better!

Did I mention the "Cup" version? LIMITED EDIIIIIITION!
