Maybe.
If they are reputable and have references available across several forums, then it should be safe.
I found a watch I liked and then ordered through their own website with my credit card. Felt a lot safer.
Don't always have that luxury if it's a rare/specific watch you're after.
Have you tried Googling the seller?

Seller is Gmt sas. Not much info available if I google the name?
Just had a quick look using all the words/phrases I searched for when I bought. Can't find anything on any forums etc. Usually Watchuseek or TZ-UK would come up with people asking similar questions or mentioning previous purchases with the seller. Is it only them with the watch you want? I'd keep looking, personally.
I have recently purchased my Patek via chrono 24 ......the German dealer had 800 high end watches for sale and very good reviews and media stories. I was happy to wire him 16k after doing my research. I also spoke to him on the phone
I have also purchased a Vacheron via chrono 24 from an Italian dealer.....no problems
Google the dealer and see what comes up......if nothing then be more careful

My slight concern stems from C24 itself – the list of watches the seller has under his name shows some being located in Italy, the rest tallying up with his location, in France.
That in itself doesn't necessarily mean he's dodgy, but I would want an explanation as to why.
It could be as simple as he has a partner or someone in Italy that he trades with, so by listing all under his name, makes it look like he has more stock or bigger than he actually is.
http://www.promenade-immo.fr – the address checks out this far at least, especially as it has "c/o Arenas Partner"
It would seem to suggest they are a property agent, and he dabbles in watches for the fun of it or to supplement his income. Maybe he's working towards that being his new business interest and is just starting out – he's only been on C24 since 2012.
Depending on the amount or given your apprehension, would you not consider just going to see him and the watch in person?
There's no customs to worry about, so no hassle in going straight there and straight back.

Agreed I also had a concern on some of his watches being located in Italy and others located in France. Tbh if I was to travel to meet agent it would wipe out the deal I would get if I bought straight from him. So I dunno really. The address does seem a bit strange though. Maybe too many alarm bells. Any further suggestions I could ask to verify legitimacy of seller? That in itself doesn't necessarily mean he's dodgy, but I would want an explanation as to why.

I bought my HydroConquest via C24 using PayPal. I did as much checking as I could with regards to the vendor but I could only find one other forum post (a German watch forum) in which a buyer said they had no issues and recommended the vendor (in Barcelona FWIW). The vendor offered bank transfer or PayPal but would not accept a credit card. I thought PP was worth using and in the end I had no issues and it was delivered via courier in 24 hours!

Would you mind revealing which watch you're looking at from them?If you don't want to, then fair enough, but it does limit how we can help you, since there's a difference between talking about under £1K and over £4K.
That said however, you could offer him the option of dealing via escrow – which means you get to receive the item after having deposited the money with the agent, and if all's tickety boo, then they receive the funds the next day.
Obviously you'll both need to register with the agent – www.transpact.com – but the fees will be more advantageous than him offering PayPal, unless he's absorbing them when you select "goods" as the option or he sends you an invoice requesting payment.
I've not spoken to the dealer yet. Communication has been via email. I emailed him today and asked the reason for having watches located in Italy and France. His answer was quote 'I'm italian man and i have my society in France because it's very near my Town I'm professional snd trusted seller'.
Lol.. I'm still none of the wiser.

If it's a more common watch which you could easily get in the UK (e.g. you could look at the watch, see the papers, try it on etc) then I would do it that way.
If it's something more obscure or just too good a deal to pass up the first thing is to call the dealer.
If they have a physical store with an address you can verify and website I would go for it. Check their stock to get a feel for what type of watches they sell, speak to them on the phone, check any social media profiles they have, look for any reviews, if it all checks out go for it!
There are many reputable dealers on chrono24 who have been in business for decades via their own stores and just use the site as a shop window, if this is the case no reason to be suspicious.

OP this is exactly the case. You've not said what watch it is you're looking at so it's hard to give advice - no need to be coy! If it's something more obscure or just too good a deal to pass up the first thing is to call the dealer.
