Has anyone made enquiries to the fitting of the boxed type cover on the M400 side vent to be fitted to a 3R? Firstly is it a straight fit no messing and what is a rough cost from the factory?

Interesting that you mention this Tony as, if I ever get into M400 ownership, I'd like the side pods removed!

Probably a sure fire way to nacker the engine?

The engine oil cooler sits behind one of the vents - given the pathetic amount of air that the vents gererate normally I'd imagine that'll be a really bad idea!

One of the side pods is functional (feeds air to the oil cooler) so removing it would be silly IMO.

Why have they moved it from the front of the engine like on all the other models? I thought that was the ideal place for it.

I think the one at the front doesn't get all that much air because it's behind the main rad.

No surprise there then! How about side pods from the race car - look much better IMO.

The one at the front is not an oil cooler, its a cooler for the power steering. Used on early models it does not do anything useful and has I think been dumped.

I have a fan that I'm going to try out.

I've asked Lee what he learnt from the alleged MIRA wind tunnel experiments but he has understandably kept silent!

However I have other cunning plans......

Greg Robb, an installer in the USA, has carbon fiber side vents that can be fitted to the 3R.

Ahh now it makes sense. I thought they had gone through a lot of trouble to put an oil cooler at the front of the car, when a small unit like that could go anywhere.

FYI, one of the US installers is also working on an air scoop for the intercooler inlet. I'll post something when they get it done. (Taking the rear license plate off should help a lot).

You mean the scoop right? The numberplate seemed to work by all reports.

Not really. Paul's experiements seemed to indicate to me that ther was bugger all air going into the Intercooler. Consequently there would be little to be gained by taking the number plate off IMHO, after all if there is bugger all air going in, there is hardly any coming out - no?

...MIRA tests were real, not alleged! We've had both the M14 and the M400 racer in the full-size wind tunnel.

FYI, we have no plans to offer the M400's side pods for 3R models.

Joust,

From my experience on track days, I have found that removing the rear number plate cured an overheating problem.
