This morning I noticed a repeated clunking noise coming from the rear of the car whilst the brake pedal was applied and the car was stationary.

Handbrake also seemed a little sticky when moving off after having the handbrake applied. There was no noise when applying the brakes whilst moving, only when stationary.

Any ideas what it could be? Car is a 2002 Honda Civic.

Since the car was stationary, I would guess it can only be the exhaust banging.

It seemed to be related to the application of the brake pedal though. When I lifted off (still stationary) the noise went away.

You mean if you hold the brake pedal down, you get a repeated knocking?

Or is it just one 'knock' per application of the brakes?

Yes, repeated knocking when brake pedal was pushed down. Knocks about 2-3 seconds apart. stopped when brake was released and I moved off. Slightly sticky moving off.

Car is manual.
