KA Exhaust Heatshield - problem if removed?

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could answer a question for me, obviously the heat shield is there for a reason, but our niece came round and I did a few things on the car for her, and one of the issues was a metallic noise that the car was making all the time. Got under the car and saw that the heatshield had pretty much deteriorated and was dragging along the ground! Ripped it off as there was no way it could be saved.
Is this now dangerous? or is it something that doesn't need worrying about?
Car in Question is a Y reg KA, worth about £500, so she doesn't really want to spend money on it she doesn't have to.
