Looks like my alternator is on it's way out, charging light on faintly, I've slipped off the drive belt and the pulley turns freely with no grating etc., haven't got a multi meter with me at present but have rovergauge plugged in and only showing 12.3 volts. The label is mostly rubbed away on (not me cleaning it, honestly)and struggling to identify a part number. It's a 1998 450 with a 7 rib pulley, any pointers please.
Thanks Peter, this is a different one to Aluns then as his is 100 amp and Magneti Marelli which I thought was OE. Even on OE there's quite a price difference between 100 & 120 amp and TBH I could do with saving a few quid after the last few months of shelling out. Thanks for the advice though, I know you're right really, was it just a random selection of alternators by TVR that produced the anomolies I wonder !
Does it really matter that much?
The spec of the alt isn't like a mechanical boat anchor ~ simply they just electrically control the magnetic field strength to get the required output at any given time ~ only caveat is ensuring that your wiring/fuse is capable of handling the alts max output?

The Magneti Marelli one off the LandRover (4247) is the standard one. They are £110 roughly from a place near Cadwell Park. Effectively brand new - the guys upgrade LRs for military use. So the standard alternators are spare.
I bought one last year, after the dim red light appeared on a track day. Car hasn't missed a beat since. if the car is running at all rough the failing alternator might explain it.
Richard, google Hobson Industries and give them a call if you want to buy one. If you want to try mine first, call or email me and I will bring it to work with me one day this week.

Thanks for all the info chaps. That's a very kind offer of a try out Anthony but I can't ask you to remove another item from your car for my benefit, surely you'll be wanting to use it yourself with all this glorious weather. As an update, as I've needed to use my chim for work for the last couple of days, and with the return journey from Shrewsbury on Saturday (total 370 miles), my engine started to cough at 4,000 rpm this morning with 30 miles to go of my journey, I've made it to my destination but that's it now, no go so I'll need to get hold of an alternator in the Newmarket area today so I can get home later. I have a couple of ideas where to go but any suggestions are always helpful.
