According to the USA e-brochure, V6 SLKs have a '100000 mile spark plug interval'. However, UK dealers 'recommend' that plugs (certainly for the SLK32 AMG) are changed every 4 years, regardless of mileage.

Which costs around £330 at the dealership.

I followed this advice in 2010 even though the car had done less than 40000 miles in 7 years and was running perfectly. They've just 'suggested' that it's time for another plug change, even though the car has only covered a further 25000 miles in 4 years.

I've declined their recommendation this time - but why, if the US brochure clearly states 100000 mile plug intervals, do M-B UK recommend 4 years?

It is 'recommended' to stop the plugs seizing in the alloy heads.

In that case, wouldn't 'inspecting' rather than 'replacing' the plugs achieve the same result?

You would think so but most of the cost is labour. (I think the plugs are only a fiver each) So they may as well replace while they are at it.
(BTW I think they are a P.I.T.A to get to)
