selling wine, single bottles.

Hi all, looking for some advice to help out a friend. He has been given a small amount of old wines as a thank you for work and wants to get a fair price for them, hopefully paying for his summer holiday. The sites I have found only seem to be interested in cases rather than such a small collection.
This is what he has.

Any advice really appreciated.

I'm sure someone with better knowledge will be along soon to advise, but as I understand it without a track record showing the wine has been correctly stored, any value would be severely compromised.

Yes hard to sell single bottles without evidence of how they have been stored.

Stick a few big steaks on the bbq and crack 'em open!

I have a bottle of '79 Krug that I am in two minds whether to drink!

That's been kept in secure, underground storage (in the UK).

Current prices (per bottle) that these can be picked up for below. These are broker prices, exc. duty and VAT, for wines with a proven provenance and storage records. Retail (shop) prices will be higher and in this case probably even more unrealistic/unachievable: as others have (or no doubt will have) pointed out, values will be much less for anything that hasn't been in appropriate (preferably professional) storage. If you do have records etc. you still wouldn't get these prices as the broker/sales-agent will want their cut.

Not really interested in selling (it was a nice gift that means a lot) but I am wondering if I should invent a special occasion ASAP!

What a kind and generous offer! This is exactly what PH is all about!

However, since you now have a child to look after, I cannot possibly offer you the champagne as I'd hate for you to be unable to give Davey Jnr the care and attention they need

Shame, I'd love to make you an offer! The '64 is drinking well at the moment, the '79 has got a lot of life left in it. Older Champagne is quite an acquired taste mind, it's unlikely to have many (any?) bubbles!

You can sell individual bottles through bidforwine, but only the Dom Perignon looks to have any value, even then, not a great vintage

I'm sure the person gifting the wine intended them to be enjoyed rather than sold on. I have a friend who has a nice wine collection and he'd likely be offended if I decided to sell the gifts that he'd given me.

Just get them down your neck!

I'll bear the offer in mind but since the person who gave me it has been married and had two kids since... I have a plan forming!

If it does get drunk, I'll let you all know how it turns out
