Just sorting out the AV for the kitchen diner - I'm planning to have a Sky HD box, Onkyo amp and speakers in the diner.

I've got a 5.1 set of Kef 2005.2 / 2010 sub going spare I was planning to use but was wondering if ceiling speakers would give a better sound......obviously would blend in better!

Was thinking 4 x 6.5" Kef or Monitor Audio ceiling speakers.

Opinions??
Cheers

The Kef's should sound better, if you have the sub as well.

The MA In-Ceilings are bigger, so will have a better bass but being an open housing behind them, in the ceiling so they may not seem as good as the closed cabinet of the KEF.

However, the newest ones CT range, do look great in the ceiling.

Hope that make sense.

Yeah, will be using the sub as well.

Your thoughts on positioning the 4 Kefs in the corner of the room near the ceiling with only the centre speaker below the TV? Or is it best to have the left, right & centre near the TV. Its really only for casual listening and watching TV while cooking.

Currently the Kef 2005.2s are matt black, has anyone sucessfully painted them white to blend in more?

I have ceiling speakers in a number of rooms and some KEFs in my home office that are used as PC Speakers as well as music.

The KEF Eggs are far superior from a sound point of view, but might not blend in well depending on your mounting options.

IMHO Ceiling speakers are great for background music, bathrooms speakers etc. Less so for TV as there's something weird about the sound coming from the ceiling rather than the direction of the TV.

Having looked at the cost of upgrading mine, you also seem to pay a premium for them over bookshelf speakers.

I have KEF Eggs in the living room and some ceiling speakers in the dining room. I would happily swap the Eggs out on looks alone.

I have Monitor Audio ceiling speakers that I use as surrounds and they are excellent. No reason they couldn't also be wall mounted to place the sound better from the TV.

They have their own back boxes so no problem with acoustics.

Thread resurrection..........

Pretty much decided to do down the ceiling speaker route, mainly for asthetic reasons.
Diner part of the room is 3.5m x 3.5m. Will have a Monitor Audio Radius 225 as a centre speaker and a Kef 2010 sub. Questions....

6.5" or 8" ceiling speakers?
Quantity 2 or 4?
Position of speakers - above TV or in centre of room?
Speaker reccomendations - Monitor Audio seems popular

Any PHers supply?
Thanks

I'm just about to find out how good the MA ceiling speakers are. I only need stereo, so I bought a CT165-T2 - stereo from a single speaker (two moveable tweeters).

I had B&W ceiling speakers in my last house with Dynamat Dynaboxes behind them to help with sound leakage to rooms above. Good clear sound but for decent all round system you'll def need a sub for bass as ceiling speakers lack bass by themselves

So.........2 LH/RH speakers or 4 in a 3.5x3.5m room??

I suspect left & right plus centre and sub will be more than sufficient for just for back ground music and watching the TV.
However now's the time to do it while the kitchen diner is being knocked around.

Thoughts?

Two would prob suffice (with a sub) but as you say now's the time to be putting more in.

If it were me I'd put the lot in now to save hassle later or stick just the speaker cable in above the ceiling to where you'd like the extra ones at a later date - at this stage it's only the cost of a few extra metres of cable and gives you the option to add more if you want them just by cutting the holes in the ceiling at the time
