I guess this question is inspired by a few recent threads about folks buying their cars.
Often, these posts are by first time buyers of the marque, which is great.

So, I just wondered, how long do people hang on to their purchases and which variant gets kept for the longest?

I'm on my second Porsche, which I have owned for 7 years and its a 996 Turbo.
Interested to hear your experiencess.

I am dreadful at keeping cars. Keep changing them. I bought my first Porsche in 1993 (944 Turbo) and just bought my tenth two weeks ago (early 911) but none of them lasted more than 18 months!

I'm into my 5th year of 996 Turbo ownership.

I had a bit of a wobble a few months back, looked at chopping it in for a C63, something that could replce my C-Class and the Turbo. I was after the best of both worlds. But then had the Turbo serviced and fell in love all over again.

Started out with a Boxster S, had that 18 month. Then a Carrera, had that 4 years. Now the Turbo.

I've owned my 996 for a little over a year; I plan on keeping it until it's appreciating in value. May be some time...

Have owned 911s for 10 years or so.

1st - A horrible bitsa (in hindsight) was owned for 2 years.
2nd - 964 C2 (lovely) owned for a year or so.
3rd - 964 Turbo (I loved this car and shouldn't have sold it) 5+ years.
4th - Mk1 996 GT3 CS. Almost 2 years. Love it!

I do get bored quite quickly but I just chop and change my daily cars when that happens, as 911 searches are usually long and labourious tasks. By using the 911 for summer weekends etc, it keeps it feeling special.
There's always something else I'd like to try but there comes a point where you think "I can't get anything anymore special than what I have for the same price and I don't want anymore cash tied up in something that spends a lot of its time sitting in the garage." That's where I'm at now, so the GT3 is a keeper. smile

6 Porsches
3.2 Carrera - 2.5 yrs
993 - 3 yrs
944S2 - owned for 6 mths whilst I still had 993
3.2 Carrera - again - 2 yrs
928 S4 - 5 mths
996 C2 - current and owned for 1 yr

interestingly, I made money on all but one of the above come resale - and that was before the explosion of air cooled values. So, can't grumble. coffee

5 days! Just got a 996TT having been trying to decide on which Porsche for a few months now. It's my second having had a 964 turbo bodied cabriolet for a couple of years, been without Porsche for a few years and decided it was time to come back!
