Was perusing the local rag website yesterday and noticed this comment on a story about another crash on the A16:

'I drive at 60 miles an hour on that road because it is the fastest speed the highways agency has suggested i can go and still be in control of the car.'

I guess that the constant 'speed kills' brainwashing works on some people. banghead

Is that not simply a longhand version of:

"The speed limit is 60 mph" ?

Look at the end, they clearly think 61 mph means they will lose control and die.

61 in a 60 is only for death racers & the criminally insane. Have they not learnt it's safer to keep your eyes glued to the speedo when you're on, not over, the limit?

SPEED KILLS folks - stay alive, stay at 60!

This could well be the case with many, many "drivers" I see sleep-driving along the A16, nose-to-tail behind a lorry doing 40-ish mph, with no intention of ever overtaking, despite long, long, long, (did I mention "long"?) clear straights available.

Even when I have demonstrated that it is possible, to overtake not only the lorry but four or five of the cars behind it in the same manouvere, very rarely does anyone deign to follow my example!

Whether you not you agree with the speed limits, the commenter's decision to obey them is commendable.

Yes, there is a case for driving to the conditions, but let's face it - We need 99% of the people to obey the limits 99% of the time, or the whole system just doesn't work. They do not have the skill to drive faster, or correctly assess the conditions in all cases.

Have you really started this thread just because you think it's stupid that the commenter is doing the right thing for the wrong reason? Let them believe they will lose control of their car at 61mph. So long as we don't have anarchy and tttery reigning supreme, who cares on their actual rationale for obedience?

In the mean time, if you want to go out for a sunday morning blast in your tvr/m3/mx5/whatever on an appropriate bit of road, you still can. No one's stopping you.

+1

What method would you rather someone with no interest in developing their skills use to esimate the maximum safe speed? I'm increasingly coming to the conclusion that even people with an interest in driving well really struggle with this. And those people are only ever going to be a minority.

It's annoying (to put it mildly) that speed limits are conflating two things: guidance, and a threshold for prosecution. But having some guidance is a pretty good idea. She's probably half right, in that she may well be dangerous at 80; maybe she wouldn't lose control but she'd do something stupid. Criticise her for that if you want, but realising your limitations (I'm hopeless at judging a safe speed, to the point I don't even know what the limiting factor on safe speed is) and adapting (I won't do more than the speed the govt advises) is pretty sensible.

They don't understand that A) its a law, not a suggestion, and B) they appear to believe if they exceed the speed limit they will lose control.

OP - could you provide a link so we can see the context?

I looks to me to be a sarcastic way of saying, "The powers that be would have us believe 60 is the maximum safe speed on that road. I don't agree but to keep them happy, I drive accordingly."

I've started this thread because it's a stupid statement. Who is to say the person in question can control a car at 60mph? They may be unsafe at 30mph, but think 60mph is ok because the highways bods have told them this is so.

This road is also tragically picking out the idiots. I have never heard of so many accidents. It seems as if everyone has a go at overtaking, even though they don't have the confidence to do it. There are also terrible examples of people overtaking on blind corners etc. It's a real mess.

I personally blame this on the lack of proper driver education, the lack of road police and the brainwashing around speed limits. Drum into some people enough the thought that simply driving to a speed limit is safe and they will believe it. There is so much more to consider!

The rest of the comment makes sense. However, the bit I have referenced in this thread doesn't.

Sorry, not sure I fully agree. The whole "speed kills" message is now so indoctrinated, that it has led to the effective self-policing of the roads by those believing it dangerous to do any speed greater than what they are proceeding at. A prime example being the intolerance in the last few years for overtaking safely on clear and open A-roads

I'd nearly prefer anarchy to vigilantism wink

I read it as sarcasm, or possibly stating impartially that he/she does it because it's the law.

I'd read it and say it that way myself, a nice slightly pisstaking way to say it's a 60 limit and I honestly stick to it.
