It depends on how much space you need, I would have thought a good (branded) pen drive would be better then a hard drive (cheaper, less power usage, more reliable), but 500GB pen drives are expensive...
If you do decide you need the s[pace and want a HDD western digital have bought out a unit they claim is optimised for PVR use...home cinema choice reviewed it this month but a quick search didn't turn anything up, I'm sure you can find it.
An SSD is an option...larger than a pen drive and low power/fast etc.

It will do a speed test on any USB storage you plug in. Non of my USB drives were quick enough, but an old 5400rpm laptop IDE drive was so that got used instead!
