Brain-pick on hard-wiring a dashcam.... (996)

I'm installing a dashcam to my 996.

Got the camera, and I've bought a hard wire box


And I've got the terminations down by the fuse box.



To seamlessly interface this, I've used one of these -


My understanding that the +ve/red connects to the fuse piggyback.

But it does raise 3 questions:-

1. The (additional)12v car-adapter is rated at 2amps - I used this to get an indication as to what fuse to use. Am I right in thinking that I need a 2amp fuse to go in the piggyback adapter?
Only got a few fuses in the box -

40, 30, 20amp - too big imho.

2. The -ve/black needs to be attached to the chassis/body. Any suggestions where I can get to this from here?

In the meantime, I'm just using the 12v car adapter - bit unsightly though!

Right, i think you need 2 fuses, you find the circuit you want to use & remove that fuse, plug your piggy back adapter into the fuse board in the spot you have just removed the fuse from. Next take the removed fuse and plug it into the bottom slot of you piggy back adapter, that puts things back to normal, you then need a new fuse to plug into the top slot of you piggyback adapter, a 5A should be fine, this is the fuse for your DVR.

You should be able to find and earth 0V point in the fuse box, use a volt meter, red lead to your red lead on adapter, and probe around with the black looking for something the gives 12v..

Slight hiccup: point c5 has no contacts in it!

In fuse book, it states that c5 is "engine compartment fan(option)"

Obviously not an option on my car

So where else is a good point for permanent live (before I go hunting with a multimeter)

Not sure what you mean here, you need a 5A fuse to go into your piggy back connector, you dont plug into a 5a location. I would use the cigarette lighter fuse, thats a perm live.

Step 1) remove cigarette lighter fuse
step 2) put removed fuse into bottom holder off piggy back conector
step 3) put a NEW 5A fuse into top section off piggy back connector
step 4) place piggy back connector into the empty space where the cig fuse was taken.

should be a 30 second job!!
