So the Shogun's an ex-Shogun. Bought last year, £700 with a year's ticket, and it's just eaten the crank pulley thread a month before a probably-tricky MOT.

We live up a steep and narrow hill in the middle of nowhere in the Welsh borders. Winter tyres alone may not cut it in anything approaching a proper winter. Ground clearance is likely to be required. (Relatively light) Car trailer towing duties will also be required. 50-mile round-trip tip runs are definitely going to be required, as are builders-merchant runs. (My record's 8x10-packs of 2.4m boards of wood cladding plus a bale of loft insulation - into a Pug 205.)

What suggest you? The obvious choices are the usual Discos and Cherokees, but give me a good reason not to consider Ford Rangers and similar crew-cabs. Passenger civilisation is low on the priority list. Subaru is probably a go, A4 Quattro et al is probably too low. Computerisation and DPFs are VERY low on the priority list. Anything CO2-taxed higher than the big-engine pre-CO2 rate is going to have to work for justification. BUT... Man-maths is working VERY much in the favour of anything v8 petrol, an itch I need to scratch, preferably with gas.

Ford Explorers are cheap and pretty huge. Ticks most your boxes except they're a V6 not an 8

There's a saying in Australia about 4x4s, I don't know if it's a common saying but an Australian said it; " if you want to go into desert, you need a land rover or a shogun. If you want to come back, you need a shogun".
Anything else is a glorified school runner, made for mounting kerbs and squashing children.
