Company car? How do you insure a chim as a 2nd car
Discussion
Want to get my foot on the TVR ladder. Spent the last 3 months trawling PistonHeads forums, Autotrader website and hours testdriving Chims.
All set to go ahead when I have my NCB queried.
I've now found that I'm penalised for driving a company car. They either won't take the 3 years NCB into consideration at all, or only on the premise that I give up the jobcar completely. How can I when I do 40k miles per year in it?!!
Can't believe the hassle when my MG costs £90/year all in!!!
Does anyone know of a reasonable inurance company to help me get past this. PLEASE - before someone else snaps up the car of my dreams!!!!

Talk to A Manning, Cheam, Sunninghill, or any of the other specialist TVR insurers. They're generally very helpful and will give you an introductory discount equivalent to the 3 years NCD of your company car driving, even for a 2nd policy.
Cheam gave me a full NCD as an introductory discount when I bought my TVR as I had a full NCD on my main car.

Have tried SunningHill - they wouldn't entertain the idea - £2k was the best they could come up with.
Shnozz - the only rot I would expect to see would be on an outrigger. Not a pleasant viewing before dinner... !
Will try Cheam and Manning in the morning - looks like they've all gone home now.

MSM Insurance will mirror your no claims that you have on your company car - all they need is a letter from your employer confirming you are insured on their policy - no accidents/claims etc and number of years

speak to lynn - very helpful (and tell her I should get a discount for all the P'hers I have sent in their direction)
My issue was slighty different, I needed to insure both my Discovery and the Chim. I phone a number of places, mentioned above, but in the end called Adrian Flux, Cherished vehicles, (www.adrianflux.co.uk) who offered me a discount for both vehicles.
While this isn't exactly the same as yours they were very good at applying common sense to the problem that, as a 3 car family, i really could only drive one at a time and so the premium for both vehicles reflected that.
Good luck mate

However, two cars generally seems like another insurance rip-off.
You need two policies and NCB is generally not transferable or shareable so the two are completely seperate. However, have a bump in one and it affects all policies.
The question is have you had any claims etc. in the last 3/5 years. Not have you had any claims on THIS vehicle.

You can only apply a NCB to one car, usually your main car. You then insure the TVR under a classic type limited use policy of say 5,000 or so miles per year.
The provider of the "classic" policy will require evidence of your NCB (or equivalent) and give the appropriate discount on your TVR policy. Classic policies only apply to second cars and the insurer will also ask you to offer details of your main car when applying.
Incidentally, people who insure TVR's under classic style limited use policies and don't have a second main car do risk voiding their insurance cover.
You can also negotiate with your classic policy insurer and have occasional business use added, to allow you to drive your TVR to the occasional business meetings in the summer say.
This sort of policy ought to be available to you from Mannings or Classicline and others.

Thanks for all your posts gents - particularly marcos maniac & JonMil. The specialists you mention were no goers - for a variety of reasons from not being interested as its the first HPV I've owned, to not taking into account the NCB accrued on my company car.
However, I spoke to David at MSM Insurance - they will mirror my company NCB, and on a 7,500 mile policy can quote £860 including recovery. A damn sight better than most ludicrous quote of £10,361!!!!
Also a genuinly friendly and knowledgeable bloke.
Just leaves me to go back and hope my chosen chariot hasn't been sold!
I'll keep you posted when I make the purchase for a proper affiliation into 'the firm', pictures et al.
Out of interest, do many people venture across the North Wales coast. I see the official North Wales club doesn't have an up and running website yet?
Cheers,
GRynners

Try AON. I have my Chimp insured through them (think the policy is called Modern Classic). It is my 2nd car. They have a flat rate policy which negates the need for a NCB, so you can keep your NCB on your day to day car - I got a quote of about £700. Phone number is: 08705 708090 or 01384 455011
