Beetle RSI , convert to auto or ????
Discussion
Hi
I've had my beetle rsi for a couple of years it drives great and handles like it's on rails !! Unfortunately after a motorbike acciden I've severly damaged my left knee which makes it too difficult to use the clutch
My thought is do I convert it to DSG ?? Or get rid ??
It would be novel I've never seen one done or would you I just be ruining the car ???
Cant make my mind up ?? What do you think ??

I'd say it all depends on how much you want to keep the car..
If it's "just a car" and you really wouldn't mind getting something else, probably best keeping it original, therefore selling as-is and getting something that suits your needs better. On the other hand if you don't want to let go of it and you can justify the cost of converting it, go for it! The swap shouldn't be too bad as the DSG unit was mated to the same engine and drivetrain in other VW cars, it would be an interesting result too
Essentially it just comes down to how much you like the car and whether you can justify the outlay

Blimey! A fellow RSI owner! Not many of us around!
Interesting idea, but given how the car borrowed so many parts from the VAG parts bin, I think a conversion may be allot more complex than you think - it's not just an R32 engine (as I found out the hard way).
How about an engine and DSG swap at the same time? Possibly easier to put back to standard if you ever choose to?
What number is yours btw?

Hi, from what I can find out we are two of three in this country mines 102.
Never thought I'd see one let alone owen one, it's just a shame it spends more time in the garage than on the road, the auto idea came after trying a r32 DSG, i thought they had the same running gear. ?????
I think I would sell or swap it if I coul find someone interested, really don't want to go down the advertise route.
Also is a blast when you get on a twisty bit of road like the ones here in Wales and I thought bikes were good.
Just the not walking very good after the drive hence thinking of the auto route

A young un'! Mine's number 78.
From what I've uncovered thus far, the block is a re-worked 2.8 V6 one, with it's own unique head, valves and pistons etc. I "think" the Haldex system is the same as the R32 one, whilst the running gear shares components between the Audi S3 and Golf R32.
It'd be a shame for you to part with it, though I'm sure you'd not lose much money (if any) when selling it. The RSi prices in Germany are quite strong at the moment and I know there's always interest on this side of the channel.
If I didn't have one already, I'd be making you an offer!

Are you the chap that's had yours from new ?????? Just had a 60000 service doneon mine, haldex unit serviced and run on the rolling road 224.7 BHP so not bad (only did 225 from new)
There was one in the midlands I think it's been sold and gone back to Germany??
It's nice to have a rare car but I would like to use it rather than just look at it.

Do you mind elaborating on that? I'd like to read about it.
Well, long story short... the engine ate a piston and resulted in having to wait over 9 month to get some new pistons remanufactured by VW (actually by Mahle I think it was) - The pistons VW had on the shelf were actually 2.8 ones and not 3.2 sized. The reason the piston failed was due to "something" being ingested into the engine (past the valve). i'd had it resprayed the week before so I'm thinking it may have been related. Anyway, that exercise taught me that the head was completely different (I had to get a new RSi head - which wasn't cheap), head bolts etc were different (given the block is different to the R32) and a few new valves etc (again different from the R32).
Anyway, 10 months of heart ache later, i got it back as good as new!
I just checked the milage on mine and she's done 153160 km's (some 95k miles). She was my daily driver for a good few years however.
As far as I am aware there are 4 in the UK.
1 has been converted to right hand drive, the other 3 are left hookers (mine included). I haven't heard about the 1 being transported back to Germany, so that might be 3 left?
Where abouts in the UK are you? I heard there used to be one in Guildford (not far from me - I'm also based in Surrey).
I've been meaning to do a readers thread for a while, though there are a few jobs I'd like to get done before posting her in all her glory. There are a few pictures taken from Riggers hot hatches article we did a while back.

Blim bug, do you know how many of these are in the uk ?????? And does anyone know if you can upload pictures from an iPad on here ??????
For photos from an ipad, click the Upload an image (beta) link when you're wiring your post, then choose file, choose existing, and upload from your camera roll or photo stream. Was there ever a DSG New Beetle? I just did a google image search for 'vw beetle dsg' and it was all pictures of the new model. So maybe, as said above, the DSG won't go in the New Beetle (as opposed to the New New Beetle, as I call it
)Does a Golf R, Scirocco R, or a TT tickle your want glands? Is there a fast New New Beetle out yet?
Bb I live in North Wales not far from St Asaph, they've done a new beetle the GSR and they do it with DSG.
I had a chipped beetle turbo before this and loved it, this ones way better just wish it was DSG.
The roads round here really lend themselves to cars like the rsi there's one from bala to oswestry I think it's the b4391, did in my caddy van (225 BHP) DSG.
