I think a veery smart move. Plenty of companies make public their technology and solutions to problems, as it helps further development. Patents are all well and good but are somewhat inaccesible and tangle up in legal jargon.

I hope it helps further the advancment of electric vehicles.

Quite simple really. They begin to run out of ideas for furthering revenue growth, therefore they start looking at cutting costs.

Easiest way is if a lot more manufacturers start demanding the same products as them, reduces material costs quite quickly.

How have they run out of idea's for revenue growth? They have been fairly clear that they intend to sell a st load more cars to grow revenues. They are using a tiny amount of space in their factory and they intend to produce a mass market car as the next car after the model X.

If all you are going to do is sell more cars, you'd want to cut costs to generate extra profit.

They've run out of new ideas, simple as that.
