MGB timimng issue?

I wonder if anyone can help me. I am in the process of selling my fathers MGB GT as I live in London and he in rural Wales. He has had the car for over ten years and has been slowly doing it up (he also had a roadster which got most of his attention) but it has hardly done 500 miles in this time.
He drove it from Wales three weeks ago and it got here OK. Occasionally missed but was happy on the motorway although the timing etc. was probably not perfect. I have driven it locally for the last two weekends and started first time not problem. I put £10.00 fuel in last Sunday drove it 1 mile back and parked it. Yesterday I went to start it and there was nothing. AA man found the earth nut to the solonoid was poor and replaced it and it started perfectly; but I did not run it for long. As sods law would have it, today on showing a prospective buyer it started fine and I drove it up the road and suddenly it was as if the car had suddenly become really badly timed with big loss of power and major popping in the exhaust.
Any help anyone can offer would be most welcome as I have a rudimentary mechanical knowledge but I am baffled by the acute nature of the change.

Can you/have you checked the fuel pump is working ok ? sounds like you know what your up to, but I think I would pull the fuel line off and with a suitable container in place double check the fuel is being pumped through. . .is there a filter on the car ? might be worth looking at that too.
Sticking float level in the float bowls might be worth looking at. .

Very similar to the issues on my Spitfire today. I'm fairly certain it's the points/distributor with me, but just wondering if you'd found anything else that might be worth me checking.
Where in Wales is your old man? Does he want to swap his nice GT for a completely knackered spitfire, plus 10k my way?!
