In a couple of months it looks like my first car, that has been slowly passed down through the family, is finally going to be scrapped. I've had the idea of putting the numberplate on retention, and then putting in on the track car I intend to buy in a year or so.

However reading up about it, it appears you can only have a numberplate on retention for 3 years? Is this the case? Although it's not a special number plate of any sort, it does have a little sentimental value, and wouldn't really want to lose it after 3 years if I had gone to all that effort of trying to keep it.

You can renew it for up to three years at a time, when that expires you just renew it again

Ahh righteo, may have misinterpreted it from the website, made it sound like you could only apply for a 3 year retention and nothing about a renewal.

Thanks guys

Is the plate a cherished one that has been put on by a previous owner or is it one that was assigned to it by the Dvla? If it is the latter then you might not be able to put it on retention as they are generally not transferable.
