3k to spend on a daily

Hi guys and gals, been on PH a few times browsing but finally signed up for some help. The missus is going on maternity leave soon so giving her my 2013 mazda 3 2l sport and I will have around 3k to spend on a new daily for my commute from Glasgow to Rosyth. Its only a 90 mile round trip but looking for something under 80k with FSH, minimum 30 mpg, preferably 5 doors and at least 160bhp. So far on the list I have a focus st170, i know it gets mixed reviews on here but theyre pretty hardy bds and fill all of the above. A seat leon cupra/fr...im a big VAG fan, my 1st car was a mk2 golf 16v gti when i was 18 and ive since tuned up a 96 polo to 180bhp. An astra turbo (sri, gsi, coupe/cabrio) like how they are easily tuned but theyre still vauxhalls(u can cover a ste in glitter...) and a couple of sleepers in the mazda 6 2.3l sport and saab 9-3 aero. Its my 1st post so be gentle :-) and no mention on CTR or any frenchies please!

You'll get a good ST170 for that price...

Why nothing French? A Clio 182 trumps the ST in almost every regard.

Im swaying towards the st170 tbh. Ive driven clio cups on the road and the track but theyre just too small! Had such a giggle in them but need to be practical...

Cheap, tunable, and available with 5 doors.
We've had 2 recently.


Better still, an Impreza WRX. But only 27mpg, fun for money, all boxes ticked.

I owned an st170 for about a year. 5years ago. Not the quickest, made it up in effort. Handled like it was on rails and would be seriously comfy for 90 mile commute. Has a lot of toys that cars of this era offered back in the day. Would much prefer it over a small hot hatch for what you need. A word of warning, mpg is seriously poor for the performance you get and not the easiest of engine for people to work on. I took mine to ford for cambelt change. And they cocked it up as they got the timing wrong. They ended up getting an other in to compare like for like. At this stage the car was 8 years old. So it just shows that the engine that was in the st was that uncommon that even the main dealers struggled with. Other than this I really enjoyed my ownership and wouldn't be put off owning another other then you don't see many decent examples about, actually you don't see many about all. Not sure I would have one now for travelling long distance. They are a bit long in the tooth and a little un common to keep maintained

Replaced it with a vag car, which felt plasticy and had no drivers feel, as I have found most vag cars offered in this era of production

Got the diesal variant, 130PD , alot of torque easily achieved 42mpg over the last road 1000miles and that was with some spirited driving at times, Im guessing your probably looking for a petrol but not sure form initial post
