2nd gear crunch
Discussion
Hi All
I've got a 93 Chim with the LT77 box. The gear change has never been that great on mine and it didn't like you to rush, but recently its been a right pig to get second gear. 1st to 2nd is just about ok iyou take it real slow and at low revs, 3rd to 2nd is nigh on impossible without it crunching like a 17 year old on their first lesson.
I've checked the clutch fluid and it's right to the brim, the slave cylinder has been changed about 3k miles ago. I'm guessing this is a gearbox issue now rather than clutch related?
Thanks.
James.

It is worn synchros, there are a lot that do it and its mainly due to fast gearchanges when beating Porsches away from the lights. Double-de-clutching will help but once the wear is there, it will never get better, but it wont affect day to day life, if you are gentle when changing, it should be a bit better.
John Reid at Blackpool did my box as he has done many others on here.
Just for now until you get it done try an oil change it may just help a bit. Myself and quite a few Wedge guys run Mobile 1 0w40 engine oil in the box and have seen a nice improvement.

Having had 2 rebuilds of my LT77 over 10 years, 2nd gear crunch is definitely a symptom of a rebuild due - unless its just when cold, and depending on the type of fluid used. If it does it hot, particularly on down changes, it worn. The subject of what to use in them has been done to death over the years, and I've used Castrol SMS, engine oil and currently run Redline gear oil. Avoid ATF.
