Shattered Sun Roof Outlander

My daughter was driving her 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander when the sun roof, which was closed,suddenly shattered, showering the car behind in broken glass, luckily the internal blind was closed at the time.Checked on the web and there are a few cases in the U.S and Canada, has anyone heard of this happening before on this model?

Never heard of this before, but your right on the web in the states / Canada quite a few cases of this, and not just Mitsubishi, Kia with the latest shape Sorento as well.

Guess have a chat with mitsubishi dealer as a recall in the states for later year cars, but I dont like your chances.

That video is cool, so I guess the sun roof class has had an impact from ??? on the one of the edges and this causes it to shatter ?

Not had a sunroof shatter, but I did notice that the sunroof is excluded from glass claims on my insurance policy.

Thanks for the comments folks and will let you know how the day goes, but judging by other incidents hold out little hope of help from Mitsubishi!

Took the car to Mitsubishi Aberdeen who were less than interested and stated "it had never happened before" and suggested my daughter contact the insurance, which she did and Autoglass replaced the sunroof glass, however on completion the mechanism would not operate and so back to Mitsubishi Aberdeen, who played with it, managed to open it and then said, "it needs a new part" 10 days estimated delivery, so she was given the car back, with the roof stuck open, no loan car available, and they would not re seal it for her either, and of course on the way home the sky opened, not that we get much rain up here, and she now has a wet roof lining plus a free shower on the way home!! To say we are less than impressed with Aberdeen Mitsubishi is an understatement. And the estimate to repair the mechanism, £1500.

Whilst not an identical situation, i've recently went through something very similar with my wife's 14 plate Evoque. She came out one morning a few weeks ago and took the car out of the garage as normal, as she came out into the sunlight she realised the panoramic roof was cracked from the front back and outwards like a snowflake.

I took the car right back to the dealer (also in Aberdeen) and after much prodding and picking was told the error was mine due to a small stone chip just above the windscreen. Whilst i don't deny there was a stone chip there, i was dumbfounded to believe that there was no protection put in place whilst designing this £40k+ car. Stone chips are inevitable so why the design the roof so fragile is beyond me.

Anyone, back on task. We were told the exact same thing as your daughter. Contact our own insurance and claim against it. Unfortunately for me, as stated the roof was not covered under windscreen policy so resulted in my loosing my 8 years no claims and paying the full excess.

Looks like your daughter is about to go through the exact same. One thing i will note is Kinghorn who dealt with the claim were second to none.
