So my new (to me!) Chim had its outrigger replaced in January but the coating is starting to flake already behind the front wheels. Should this be so in such a short period?

Short answer is no if that part was supposed to have been replaced. Suggest contacting whoever did the work!

That doesn't look like flaking, more like damage due to stone chips thrown up by the tyres. I strip and refinish the exposed section of my outriggers shown in the photo every spring for that reason

This is what I suspect really, I assumed that the new outriggers would not do this. What's the best treatment for this?

l cant believe if the metal was keyed correctly that the paint or power coating, should not come away that easily!!!. your outriggers are only 6 months old !!!. go back to the firm that did the repair .

I use a chisel to take off the damaged paint, heavy wire brush, rusted eater then 2 coats of silver hammerite. It's quick and easy. Many people recommend all sorts of clever and expensive paint systems but they all chip so why bother.

Who did the outriggers? Mine looked exactly like that after about 18 months and I've had to spend four months this winter with the body lifted rectifying the problem.

Definately not. Had mine replaced 2 years ago and still spotless. Didnt get them wax oiled either.
You do say outrigger so maybe this one wasnt replaced? As has been previously said I would take it straight back to where it was done as any decent garage wouldnt want to get a bad reputation for this sort of work, especially a they will all need doig at some point.
Good luck! James

That's also a fair bit of surface rust for an outrigger that was only replaced 6 months ago, especially as it would take time for the paint to chip off. Are you 100% thats a new one as it doesn't look it to me.

Both outriggers were replaced at a cost of £1800, I'm going to contact then first before I name them on here as they are one of the major players in tvr! Does not look a great job though

l hope you get this sorted. I know alot of the bigger tvr dealers farm their chassis work out to smaller engineering companies. Was this the case, without naming them please as l don't think its allowed on here !!!!!

Get in touch with whoever did it. I had mine done a while back and rust started showing through within a month. The company that did it were mortified, came down with a trailer and took it away and discovered that the powder coating had some issues. They sorted it all very quickly and its been fine ever since.

Sometimes cock ups happen, its how they are dealt with that separates the good places from the crap ones.

6 months, that's outrageous. Something's done badly wrong, I'm sure the company will sort it. If not tell us in sign language!
Makes my home made job seem immaculate!!!

I agree about paint, I aim to coat them for fun every year and keep them looking brand fire new so I use Hammerite. Simples.

I wasn't sure at first but now it's hardened off it's pretty tough really.

So was I but they came out with a trailer and collected it. Give them a call and see.

That's the outrigger behind the front wheel, I'm sure on a 98 chim it would be in much worse condition. Every other car I looked at that had not been replaced was in much worse condition by far at that point, no powder coat at all.
