Just signed up for a Macan today

Now filled with doubt.

I wanted something special. I have a 535d touring at moment and want something more sporty but still practical and refined enough to do long distances. Something that looks good; sophisticated. I had thought about a six series but dynamically the reviews I read weren't so good so thought I needed adaptive drive and integral active steering to give me what I want, maybe not so practical though, but ticked all the other boxes. Can't seem to find one second hand with the spec I want.

So found myself reading, (and watching) every review out there and the Macan seemed the right choice, went in today and had a test drive and it seemed ok.

Can a car like the Macan be better dynamically than a 5 series? Or any other similar saloon for that mater?

Macan S petrol , test drove the diesel today which was no where near as good as my old LCI 535d. The rest of the car was great though. I will have a test drive of the petrol in September 2014 !! . Delivery they say is sept 2015!!!

For that kind of wedge I'd be looking at an M3 unless you have a 'toy' in the garage. Nice cars though, the Macan - but if you want sporty, I'd not buy an SUV.

Can it feel better dynamically? Absolutely. Can it be better? I have my doubts.

We have a new Cayenne S in the family and I was shocked how compact and "chuckable" this car feels on the street. It does feel like a much smaller car than it is and, dare I say, a little bit like a sports car with the suspension and transmission in sports mode.
I can imagine that the Macan conveys this feeling to a much greater extent.

However in the end it’s still a sizeable SUV with a relatively high center of gravity and you can’t cheat physics. The Cayenne does not show its size and weight in everyday driving, but there a points (fast sweeping corners, braking) when you become painfully aware of its limitations. I doubt you are planning any trackdays with your Macan so you made the right choice, it is the only SUV I would consider if I absolutely had to get one.

Shirley a Sport Utility Vehicle will be very sporty or at least help you be sporty? I know if I were looking for a drivers car I'd choose one with a higher centre of gravity. They say it does great things for the way a car drives

Personally if I came back from a test drive with a reaction of "it seemed okay". I wouldn't be parting with my money and keep looking elsewhere.

Some great opinions! Thing is I only put up 3k which is refundable I will have another test drive in September anyway to test the petrol so I still have time to change. What I saw today was a great looking car, to me, much better than equivalent BMW and a wonderful interior and with amazingly comfortable seats.

I think Porsche have a winner here but I hope the petrol car turns out to be a better bet. That diesel is still single turbo, cast iron block, Audi unit. It didn't feel right in this car.

A black or dark-blue M5 sounds like a better bet.
