I could easily afford the £289 pcm, but even the £5000 deposit could buy a really lovely E39 530i Sport or something pretty decent on its own. And I know where I'd rather put my money, and then I'd have the £289 to go towards fuel and maintenance. Plus I can't help but be reminded of the awful 318 tds when I think of the 318d....

Of course. Sadly an E28 M5 is a dated old banger and a 318d M-Sport is the height of cool to the target audience of that advert.

Well I think people think of BMW as a premium car, even on here BMWs get a lot of praise, M3s get so much love its mad for a 2 dr saloon car.

At about 6-7 years old, us kids were leaving school and the gaggle of working class parents were in the grounds to collect their spawn, and I distinctly remember about 5-6 Dads fawning over a BMW saloon. I remember thinking at the time 'what the hell are they getting all excited for, its saloon car, not a porsche'. But then I've expensive taste and as a child a friend of the family always had 911s, Ferraris, NSX's etc, so always felt like the BMW aspiration was something for poor people, rather than an actual 'high end' product.

It's interesting how the German makes have been now seen as very 'hip'. I always associated until very recently big Merc, BMW, Audis as middle class whips, rather gansta ones. Maybe young kids these days want to be dentists rather than rappers. My very middle class friend's Dad had a lovely 5 series, 2.5 (I think) 6 cylinder, auto box, cream leather and such a nice ride. So comfy.

So I don't think its a stupid advert for who its aimed at.

That radio advert really sells it, it's got a patronising woman talking on ot and that

" you can get it if you really want, you succeed at last "

Song on it the backround.

Then she says with Synther BMW you can drive away in the car you REALLY want

I can't say I've ever wanted to own a base spec 1 series or any of those hiddious x1s

Although it begs the question why is the 3 series advert bad for renting a car when do many pistonheads members have spaffed in their pants over m135i cheap lease deals?

I'd say it's quite a surprisingly honest advert, although it could be improved by BMW also offering finance on the initial £5k as well

Sad thing is far far too many people appear to aspire toward renting a new diesel rep mobile, many without actually doing the sums to see if lease/rent/pcp/finance is the best solution.
