Sept drive back to the UK from Monaco - route suggestions
Discussion
I'm going to be down near Monaco in early Sept and have decided to ship a car down and take a few days to drive back instead of flying.
I was planning to take in the Route Napoleon but if anyone has any other suggestions for drives / places to stay I'd love to hear them.
I haven't been able to take time out for a road trip for the last few years now so I really want to make the most of this break.

This may be of no use, because i only ever do these routes in the lorry, (so all motorways) from 1 gig to another, BUT, in the right car
i've always said if and when i've got 1 i'd come out of Monaco and run along the e80/e74 to Italy and then continue along e74/a10 to Genoa. Although a major route, i still think a cracking drive, that at times is made up of either cracking bridges, or some lovely long tunnels, that in the right car that makes the right noises would make an epic drive. you could always then head upto Turin and come home through mont blanc or similar into France and then once down the mountain you'd be on the white motorway which for a good few hours is again a lovely drive with some beautiful scenery as far as about Macon.
Alternately, you could head east out of Monaco maybe taking coast roads and head towards Montpellier, and then head for the e11/a75 if you wanted to do the bridge at Milau which is stunning, and the nice drive onwards upto Clermont Ferrand. then maybe detour via Le Mans on the way home if you fancied it.

Route Napoleon is spectacular. I would give Grasse a wide berth though. The cols north of Monaco, cutting onto the RN as far south as possible, head to Digne and then take the D1075 to Grenoble. Brilliant.
Up through France, try all the 'Porsche' numbered roads around the Dijon area - very worthwhile.

Drove back from Monaco the other week - drove over towards Genoa then up to Lake Orta for first stop. Next day drove up through Simplon pass and then onto Furka pass over to A2 and followed that up to Strasbourg picking a little bit of Autobahn on the way
From Strasbourg over to Calais. Would have thought the passes should be open in September and the scenery is epic. Came down via N85 so best of both worlds for me but if I had to choose one it'd be the Swiss return route.
