Many of these fireworks are not for sale to the public but only to the trade and licensed users. The explosive qualities requires responsible experienced and insured users. I doubt if you can buy them unless you can tick those boxes. Some of the Chinese copies might be available but these can be very variable in their detonation and are not really recommended. Sadly such activities really are the province of experienced firms. But as you suggest there are fun and have an effect very similar to mortars. Hence the restrictions.

Remember a few years ago in a tvr Tamora , boot full of fireworks ( all my luggage in other cars!) . Got pulled at Portsmouth ferry by customs, can I See your engine she said! . Thank you god. These fireworks came from a friend who did proffesional shows, so would have in for some crap if caught. Put on a good show on the Sunday night though. Good memories and glad it still goes on.

The one that went off Monday morning, was used to wake up the last member of a pitch a few away from ours - it was so loud it made the airbed move

The cloggies next to us popped their fridge on a fire. Louder than any firework I've ever heard.

Security we're not best pleased.

Our group were a few tents down from them on the next row. A spark from that could have had a tent in a ball of fire in seconds. Morons

It wa coming from the parking over the road next to the airport

Not especially intelligent then. The ones next to us put three wheelie bins on their fire, but amazingly they didn't smoke much and only seemed to contain minimal small gas cylinders....

On a related point, who decided that plastic wheelie bins should be used on the campsites instead of the old oil drums they used to have? Surely dozens of them ended up as a melted pile of plastic on Sunday night?!
