Afternoon gents,

I'm looking at changing my daily for one of these over summer. I've read a few buyers guides et al but is there anything really specific I should look for?

My budget is £45k ish. I want a true auto and not the MC shift model.

Is the exhaust on the 4.2 valved and operated by the sport button like the later models?

I've seem basic service costs range from £380 to £1300, what is the going rate at an Indy for a basic 12k service?

Out of interest what is fuel consumption like on the motorway, as that's where I'll be 99% of the time, most people are saying high teens with mixed driving but what about purely distance work?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome.

For that price you might get an early (09) 4.7 auto which does have valved back boxes - the 4.2 does not.

MPG for me 21 overall in over 20,000 miles and up to 28 on the motorway.

Can't help with your service question as my car is still under the 3+2 years warranty.

As someone who has owned 4.2 and 4.7 Auto, i'd strongly recommend the 4.7.

Also as EC2 says 4.7 Auto has valves that open in Sport mode.

If the 4.7 is the one to go for I may have to go for the MC shift model then. Since true 4.7 autos seem thin on the ground at my budget range.

There was a 4.7 Auto sold at ADG last week for £50k and that was a 2010 so a 2009 will be in budget if you try hard.

Try the MC shift 4.7 before you buy as it's a strange gearbox. Auto is much easier to master. MC shift is like SMG BMW's or the RTronic in an R8.

I had an M3 CS and didn't mind the smg box I've just being spoilt with my 8 speed ZF in my 335d.

What's the bottom end for a 4.7 MC? Where's a good place to source one as they seem a little thin on the ground? I don't mind traveling but ideally it needs to be from a dealer.

Thanks so far!

4.7 and 4.2 are as different as night and day, try both, you will want a 4.7 and it should hold its value better

MC 4.7 came out nine months before the Auto 4.7 so there should be more around. Cheapest I saw advertised was £40k with high miles. There is high chance you will need to buy a clutch whilst you own it so price that in versus the auto.

Reckon you should be able to get a 4.7 MC Shift for your budget, without silly miles, just need to be patient. Values have firmed from what I have been seeing and as said above, the 4.7 is likely to hold its value better than the 4.2, which if you drive both you will appreciate why! Good luck, they are worth the wait.
