Taking a hire car across to France?

Is this possible is it allowed, does it cost extra, which companies let you do it?

We're visiting the UK for two weeks, and wifey wants to see a bit of France. We'll be hiring a car for two weeks, but it would be nice to pop across the waters for a few days without having to mess about swapping cars.

Yes it is possible. I have done it with these guys below.

It varies from company to company. For example, when I asked, Enterprise said they don't allow their cars to be taken out of the UK.

I looked online about it, several places said 'Inquire when making your booking'. Great, until they say 'no' as we are booking the car.......

I guess flying and hiring a car at an airport over there would be another option?

I called Budget rental at LHR last week to enquire and was told it would be no problem, I just needed to tell them at the rental desk so that some extra paperwork could be generated, there would be an extra charge but they were unable to tell me what that charge would be.

Eurocar usually give the best deals. A lot won't let you take cars to Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic for some reason!

I just booked two weeks with Enterprise, then called them up as they request, and was told 'No, we don't let you take cars across borders'. So I cancelled the booking.

Then I called National and they said 'Yes, no problem, cost you 48 nicker extra insurance for four days in Europe'.

So, tomorrow I will call and book that, then book P&O ferry Dover to Calais, about 120 squid.

Hertz have always been great when i used to drive over to Germany

Tried Thrifty one year.... Never again! Worse than useless and charged a shed load more than they told me on the phone.... argued and argued with them at the office when picked up the car but had a ferry to catch and wedding to get to in Germany so wasn't really in a position to walk out! Customer services in UK couldn't give a sh*t when i complained when we got back....
