So, a friend of mine was invited to Le Mans and had to drive there. He drives a Mondeo, so wanted to purchase something less boring for the journey.

He had a budget of £1300

I won't say what he bought, but would be interested to see what the coolest car you would buy on his budget.
We have a £5 bet that no one on here will pick the car he purchased for the journey.

To keep it fair you need to show a link to a car within budget.

9-5 Aero would be good for that amount, or an an LS400 Mk4.

All suggestions have to stand a decent chance of getting there and back without AA European cover!

Bit of a stab in the dark, I reckon he went for a Fiat Barchetta. Steering wheel on the wrong side so useful for Euro trips. Cheapest I could find is £2250, but £1300 might be doable for a slightly ropey one.

Alfa GTV 2.0 ? The V6 is out of his budget.

Was it a London Taxi ?

I'd personally use an RX8 wink

Is it still possible to get a functioning R21 Turbo or BX 16v for this sort of cash? Or maybe an Alfa 75

I just bought an E38 728i for a 1,100 mile round trip to Germany over the last 5 days. It had a fuel leak, a noisy wheel bearing, and a cracked windscreen but did the trip just fine - it cost me £600. Ample boot space for all my gear, dual zone climate, and cruise control. It was perfect. Just got to see about getting rid of it now smile

All excellent suggestions so far. Certainly much better than my friends choice.

I thought about a Porsche 944, but I couldn't find one for £1300, although they weren't far off that, so maybe with a bit of a haggle, they would be in budget.

Do you know, thinking about the replies, the Fiat Barchetta is a great car for that money.

I think that would have been my choice in a similar situation.
