Repairing an HT lead

I've got a broken HT lead on an E28 M5 engine which I need fixed.

BMW sell them only as a set of 7 (for around £500) or as individual components for a more palatable price. However, I don't know how to make one up myself, and all of the garages I've spoken to don't seem keen either - I trust it's a fairly specialist job to do it properly rather than a temporary repair?

So, does anyone know of someone who can put one together (properly)?

Are these any good for you, sounds far easier than repairing one? There are cheaper ones on ebay as well.

The terminals are only crimped on aren't they? I'd have thought you'd just need the correct crimping tool. It's only a cable at the end of the day. I bet you can get all the bits on ebay, or there are various automotive electrical suppliers online.

Given that these operate under very high tension I wouldn't mess about trying to repair them, any poor connection or isolation will result in heat or unexpected short, not worth it IMO.

Is it a break in the lead? If so, one of These will do to complete a join at £2.95.

Have a look at performanceleads.co.uk. They made me a custom set up for my Mini a while back. Managed to get the proper ends for the ford coil and everything.

Repairing doesn't sound like a great idea to me. HT circuits are buggers for annoying faults.

Thanks all. I've had a chat today with Phil at Magnecor. I'm going to send him the broken lead for him to see if it can be repaired, and if not he'll make me a replacement.

To close this out, I sent the lead to Phil at Magnecor for him to have a look at, with the worst case being that if it was beyond repair he could make me a new (individual) lead to replace it.

In the end he replaced the cable, retaining the original boots, and it arrived back in the post this morning with my wallet £9.50 lighter.

Top service, and highly recommended!

Given that HT leads are a service item, that's just crazy. You should be able to get a set made-to-measure for a fraction of that. Are there special boots or something involved?

The M88 uses the same plug boots as the S14 and they're pricey as they're not used in anything else.
