Which is the most collectable 928?
Discussion
Ever since the film 'The Business' I fell in love with 928's. I'm thinking if getting one for a bit of fun at the weekends. I love the look of the very early cars, but just wanted some views on which are the most collectible? What year, model, colour? Am
I right in assuming the car on the film is a 928S?
Also anyone know of any good ones for sale? I'm most concerned about getting one in mint condition with low mileage, so appreciate it's going to cost a bit more.

The Porsche 928 is a beautiful looking car, well before it's time and IMO still looks modern today!
I thought you meant Risky Business, so I'll have to watch The Business!
Manual GT's seem to be sort after or end of line GTS. The S4 looks like the best value but I'm not a 928 expert so I'm sure someone will be along shortly to give some advice.
This 928 but like all older Porsche would need a specialist check.

Purists may say the original 4.5 litre car, especially as a manual - in fact manual anything will always be rarer as most people bought them as an auto luxury GT. The only problem you may find with an early car is the 4.5 litre engine that was offered at launch was a bit of a compromise from the original design spec due to the worldwide oil crisis that was experienced during the development years and therefore, could be considered not powerful enough. The car in The Business is a 928S. This was launched two years after the original and immediately jumped to the 300bhp that had been envisaged for the car from the start.
The UK-only 928 S4 SE is now very rare (a manual S4) as it was only produced for one model year and was really the precursor to the (also very collectible) manual-only GT.
However, whatever you buy will be enjoyable. All the 300bhp+ cars were very quick motors regardless of gearbox. I've just bought a low-mileage very last-of-the-line 928 S4 Auto and couldn't be more chuffed (it was the car featured in July's Classic Cars magazine). I think now is the time to buy them as prices appear to have turned a corner and starting on the up. Recently, two 928 GTs have been sold, one with 75,000 miles that was up at £17,995 and another with 48,000 miles that was up at £27,995. Also, a late 928 GTS has just been sold with 43,000 miles on the clock that was advertised at £33,995. Very decent cars can be bought for quite a bit less but now's the time, in my opinion.

If it's risky business you mean I thought from memory it was a "standard 928" ie no black rear or front spoiler. Could be wrong though. I've got a zinc silver 4.5 and prefer the cleaner lines and lack of side protectors. They all look great though and are like hens teeth on the roads these days. I moved from a 4.5 tvr chimaera and find the performance of the 4.5 more than enough. The maximum torque comes in at lower rpm than the 4.7 300bhp version which suits my driving style better, but each to their own. The prices of all versions are likely to increase over time.
How can you not love this car!

Better a high mileage car which is driven regularly and is well maintained than a low mileage one that has festered.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LgZjP8gKg8

I bought my GTS from a recognised expert owner and it is fresh as a daisy at 145k - goes like a train, only faster!
I don't know if you're still thinking about a 928 or indeed, what your budget might be but this is certainly up there in the desirability stakes 928-wise http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1991-PORSCHE-928-GT-MANU...

very low mileage too (for a 928) If it goes for sub £15K that will be a bit of a bargain
