you can "delete" it usualy, or failing that download tweakUI from www.microsoft.com as that lets you change whats on the desktop.

Control panel --> add/remove programs --> windows components.

untick IE.

Wave it good bye.

One question: how do you use windows update?

To you Windows Update you have to use IE which is a pain unfortunately. I tend to just remove the desktop icon and leave IE installed on the PC

For XP

Right click the desktop
Select 'Properties'
Select the 'Desktop' tab in the 'DIsplay Properties' window
Click on 'Customize Desktop' button
Deselect 'Intenet Explorer' checkbox in 'Desktop Items' dialogue
Click 'OK' to close dialogue
Click 'Apply' in 'Display Properties' window
