Fault code readers

I've got a check engine light on my MR2, so the time has come to buy a fault code reader.

I've seen a lot of recommendations for the old Autel products, but they seem to have been replaced by the AL319/419/519 range - does anybody have experience of these? Or can you recommend an alternative?

I notice some offer live data, what would this be used for and is it overkill for home use?

I opted for a Bluetooth dongle which talks to my phone, both because it was cheaper and because it offers unlimited functionality if you can be bothered to find the right software. I think it was <£5.

Just recieved (this morning) a "D900" fault code reader, £14 on eBay. Will report my findings once I find 3xAA batteries

I've used both the dongle type and the handheld type at work and much prefer the handheld type, due to them being less diddly to use and more robust.
