just out trying to fit clives y piece and the exhaust needs to be slid back about an inch to get the y piece out - is this easy to do?

Any help much appreciated as I am in that all to pharmiliar place now where the motor is in bits and I don't want to come in until it's finished!
Cheers.

Remove arb brackets x 2, leave ARB swinging
Remove 13mm bolt from side of block
Loosen exhaust clamp
Loosen rear 13mm nut on hanger
Remove 6 x 17mm bolts that hold the under tray on to the chassis
Slide exhaust rear wards.

Shirley you can move it back far enough without playing with the ARB, is it really that tight?

Yes a royal PITA swapping Y pieces when you have no ramp mines the same, won't quite come out with out having to drop the whole exhaust back a little. There are a few that seem to be able to do it without.

Next time I do mine I was going to measure how much the Y piece slids in, there maybe enough to say cut 1/2" - 1" off the exhaust under neath which would allow the Y piece to be removed without messing about. Twice Yearly task to fit cat for mot and back again.

Cheers mate! All on now and back together, thanks to Paul, (rugbyfester) for the quick phone helpline call! Had to loosen the rear hanger and the 6 x 17mm bolts on the tray, but left rear arb alone, this gave a couple of inches or so to slide it back. 100% would not come out without sliding it back. If I'd have known I had to do all that I'd have taken it into one of branches and used a ramp!!!!!! Typical hey.
Anyway now it's on every time I start it up I can feel a blowing from the drivers side clamp where the manifold seals to the y, no matter how many times I loosen and re tighten it doesn't seem to want to seal?
Any ideas? other side is spot on?

Are you sure that it's seated in the groove correctly? I can get mine all clamped up tight but the flangey bit doesn't sit in the groove unless I use a strap to hold it all together tight before I tighten the clamp up.

It's looking like exactly what you are saying, I tapped it around and done it up and again and it is better, but still a tiny blow, think I'll get a strap and do as you've suggested to get the final bit spot on.

You'll probably need a proper 5 tonne truck strap to do it, little luggage ones don't seem to do it. It's bit of a mission to figure out how to do it without putting pressure on anything else, I wrap mine around the flat bit of the manifold so the straps tight and then loop it up to where the lambda sensors are (make sure it doesn't slip down and put pressure on them when your're tightening the strap) and then have the ratchet in between the engine and the y piece on the drivers side. The thing that gets in the way the most is the swirl pot, but if you set it up right you can have the strap just rubbing it without putting loads of pressure on it.

If you don't have a 5 ton ratchet spanner at hand a decent (fingerthick) rope will do. Sling it losely round the ends of the two headers, knot the ends so it forms a closed sling. Put a screwdriver or short bar in the middle and wind up the rope by turning the bar. It will pull the two headers together. Smear the surfaces of the contact areas with say Vaseline and put the clamp on. Tighten slightly, use a plastic hammer to help it seating, tighten bolt further, repeat until it sits. Don't expect the clamp to tie the y-piece and header together, the bolt will brake long before.

Hi Matt offer still stands for Saturday at mine or yours - I can bring the ratchet straps.

The first time I did mine I had it blowing but just a little jiggery pokery with the straps had it done.smash

Have you tried to listen with a piece of garden hose to identify where the blowing is excatly coming from??

You thought about going to the TITT yet??

Hi Paul, thanks very much for the offer mate but I'm busy all day Saturday, taking the old man for a brewery tour for his father's day present - sort of a present for me too haha!
I can feel a tiny blow on one side just by putting my finger around it, I would definately like to bring it over or you come to come to me at some point to have a go with the straps. We'll have to sort something out when you're free mate.

Once it's off, remove about an inch from your exhaust So next time you can just remove the Y-piece.
