After reading through engineer Johns' thread in the griff forum (another brilliant thread) i got to wondering at which point do you bite the bullet and get a new chassis?

1. At the point you think it needs it;
2. At the point you have the time;
3. At the point you have the money;
4. At the point you have the inclination;
5. At the point it fails it's MOT because of the chassis;
6. All of the above.

If its a non DIY job, I would suggest sooner rather than later, as I have noticed the prices of a full refurb has crept up over the last 2 years, and I think will steadily increase without our wages rising frown. If its a DIY job then that can take months and sometimes years, when you start stripping everything down and see 90% of the components require renewel.

I was meaning how bad would a chassis be before it was beyond repair, I've seen some threads on here and thought they were quite bad but got repaired.

Once you get lots of holes on the mid-rails, then I would imagine its game over. Outriggers are a common replacement... Even consumable in some cases!

when you have your next service have a good look with your mechanic when its up on the lift. get a torch and have a good feel around. if you see rot, then there's more you can't see while the bodies is on. lf you Do decide to get the out riggers done, go to a company that does a body off repair. lt may cost afew hundred quid more than with the body insitu repairs. But then and only then you can have recommendations about the rest of the chassis.

smile theres a thread on the griff forum and TVRCC called "Back from the Dead", his refurb has been going on for years also. I know this as I have been to le man 3 times with them and each year Spike has said it will be finished for next years race. Hes not taking it to classic le man this year neither so that will be 4 yearssmile. But the car is having a full restoration job to it, so will let him off a little.
