Ok I'm owed some money from 2013/2014
Do i need to apply or will HMRC be so kind and do it automatically.

Did you complete a Tax Return for 2012/13?

Was not in the country 12/13
Only came back September 2013 and only worked 3/4 months of that year
I worked out it is about a grand I think
I was working paye
I just thought they might have done it automatically

I think if you're just doing PAYE, you'd get it back gradually in the form of a different tax code.

HMRC are just starting to process the P800's which are the PAYE recs for individuals -your repayment may well be sent to you in a few weeks.

However, do they know you were non-resident? You may need or be required to file a self-assessment tax return dependent on your circumstances.
