Having started the week at a certain race track with Renault hot hatches and now with Harris, Matt and hundreds of thousands of German there again for the 24-hour race the temptations for a Nurburgring related POTW were hard to resist.

Aware that quite a few of you are already feeling, well, wrung out, we managed to park our Nordschleife fixation and find an alternative for POTW. And here it is - another French hot hatch! Two motivations for this. Well, three if you include the 205 GTI's permanent place in the hearts of many on the PH team with Matt picking out a tempting example as a Spotted earlier in the week. First, we heard that Peugeot is bringing some sort of 30th anniversary special 208 GTI to Goodwood next week. And second we've been spending a bit of time in the regular one. The boots it has to fill are mighty - on looks alone the 205 GTI remains pretty close to hot hatch perfection.

My dad had one of the very last non PAS non CAT 1.9 GTIs, in miami blue with half leather (L413 RAC). It was awesome. I remember turning 17 and begging him to at least get a quote to insure me...think it was about £6K iirc

I was a passenger in a 205GTi which crashed head first into a transit van. Engine came through to crush drivers foot and legs, he lost a kneecap, his legs were broken in multiple places and his pelvis was broken in 2 places. In hospital for 6 months, still can't walk properly and this was 20 years ago.
The police said they were sick of picking up broken 205's after accidents, said they were not much better than a paper bag and the engines often fell out as they were lifted onto a truck, such was the flimsy build.
Lets not forget the truth about this cars, misty eyes as we might be, they were death traps compared to a modern car.

To counter this; a friend of mine t-boned a car in his 205. It pulled across a DC in front of him and he hit it behind the driver's door. It nearly tore the other car in half and the roof of the 205 was buckled back to the hatch but he was uninjured.
