Having taken the Wedge over to Le Mans recently I was aware that I would appreciate a bit more acceleration.

I wouldn't want to spend a fortune or bore the engine out or anything so dramatic.

What are thoughts on tuning and what gains are there to be made. Do we reckon I could get a sub 6 second 0-60 time and similarly improved mid-range acceleration?

Hi mate...I have read articles on higher rate injectors..Bigger AFM...Chipped ECU's....MS3 and a whole host of add ons that report a big increases in power but whether these can be added without head work or profiled cams I'm not sure..I know that in my search for more power with the V6 the supercharging cost a fortune and ended in tears even though it was through my impatience.

Im happy with my V8 and accept that its a 26 year old car that can still out perform most modern cars..I have learnt that if you want more power then i don't think there is a cheap solution as there is no substitute for cubes...Im sure if there was we would all be doing it.....Cheers...Ziga

Given Mr Zigs comments I assume you have a 2.8 V6.

This being the case, then you've got few options. In reality, there's very little that can be done to the 2.8 cheaply.

You could swap it to a 2.9 but I don't know what wiring and gearbox compatibility issues you'll have in a wedge.

An engine swap is the easiest route. The Jag 3.0 V6 is cheap in S-Type form (£700 for a whole car) but you'll need a diff with higher ratio.

V8 power V6 sound maybe 40mpg!

Hi mate...I think its a 350i...The Sprintex is the same one that was used on the SX conversion...Not sure exactly what was changed or whether the compression was lowered...I was thinking of it for mine but if it goes pears again then that will be the last of me in the Wedge world... frown

I think the best way to go faster is to upgrade to the next wedge in the line

Someone once said there is no substitute for cc's and they are damn right

I've just picked up a 420se with a 450 spec engine. This thing is quite possibly the quickest car I've driven and she didn't break the bank

There is a V8 Developments wedge with a 4.6 engine on the tvrcc site for under 6k

That will shift!

There is someone one on PH that race's with a 3.5 l rover that IIRC made very big horse power ! But with everything it all depends on how deep your pockets are !

1st thing is to see how well the current engine is running on a rolling road,
You could gain quite a bit just getting the engine running right.

Then you may want to look at a better camshaft and get the pre-load set right, so it will rev.

I agree fully with the above.

Aside from that, fit a 4.3!

OK so we are starting from a 350i. Your 0-60 should be 6.1s so we are only talking 0.2s improvement.

Your first problem is the red line for 60mph, which comes in at 57 mph as I recall in 2nd? Anyhow you need to confirm this as part of the problem is the last gearchange into 3rd. If you need to you can increase the gearing a little by getting bigger rear tyres and/or wheels.

As Leigh say, make sure it's all running right and get an RR session ot diagnose any funnies.

As has been mentioned before a rising rate regulator, or in general improved fuelling over the standard 4CU setup, will get you a few more bhp.

Then we start getting into engine mods, probably the cam is the next easiest part to change and the choices appear to be BHP versus driveability/low end torque, although related to this (see above) if you can raise the red line 6% or so you can hit 60 in 2nd.

Wow!! That sparked some responses! Thanks everyone.

I'll be honest, I don't have deep pockets and also I don't know how well my existing car is running. I might take it on the Rolling Road at BBWF 2015 if there is one.

At the moment I have only had the car for a year and I don't get enough time to work on it regularly so I haven't been through it with a fine tooth comb to really understand it or make sure that everything is running right. Clearly I need to get to that stage first before committing ££££'s to improving the performance.

I have been toying with taking it off the road for a total restoration but if I have that kind of money I might get myself another Cerbera!!

Decisions, decisions!!

Hi Adrian - that car would be the cheapest route to amximum power increase (having been the previous owner of both the 4.6 and your car I can safely say you would be happy with the difference...

On a financial basis, it makes very little sense to modify a Wedge for increased power. Sell it and buy another one.
But financial sense has very little to do with running a Wedge. Doesn't nitrous offer the best bang/buck ratio?

Agreed, my old man replaced the 3.5 in his wedge for a V8 Developments 4.6 and the difference is unreal. I believe the 4.6 we have also has a stage 3 head, high torque cam and shorter/wider inlet trumpets.

I couldn't say what the 0-60 is, but he can happily keep pace with a Tuscan up to 80mph. The acceleration is ferocious.

Worth bearing in mind that any reasonable increase in power will find the weak point in the chain (a new gearbox in our case....).

Shortly followed by the brakes if kept standard....

The best bang for the buck mods would be;

-If you're running composite head gaskets, swap them out for tins to get an approx 0.6 increase in compression ratio. ~£30 for gaskets and new stretch bolts.

-A 'stage 1' ported cylinder head. These have an around an extra 30bhp power potential over standard heads. These go for around £250 second hand on ebay, or i've done new stg1's for around £300 for a couple of people.

-New camshaft, lifters and valve springs. There's load of choices for the rover v8 so it depends what sort of torque curve and power band you want. If you stick with standard rover v8 valve springs you're limited to cams with upto around 0.44" lift as above this you risk coil binding the valve springs. If you get your heads cut for dual valve springs then your choice is increased (but still limited to cams that don't need piston cutouts)
Cost here is around £200 to £400.
So, a nicely ported set of heads with TRIPLE valve springs should be a bit cheeky then???

And a fesity cam to go with it, should make some decent figures for a 350!

wink

A feisty cam is a must for a rover v8, the old addage 'pick a cam then buy the next one down' doesn't work on this engine, infact it's the exact opposite.

As for the ported heads, if they're running the stock 40mm valves, it doesn't matter how many valve springs they have coz they all flow about 155cfm give or take a couple. (and on a serious note, the best valve springs available at the moment are the Real Steel duals, the triple springs are considerably softer)
Couldnt be exactly sure on the valve sizes as I havent removed the heads, but I did have a chat with the guys who made them about 10 years ago from an old company called rovercraft, and he tells me that all of his stage 2 heads were ported and polished and gas flowed, and they all had as large as possible exhaust valves fitted, along with shortened unleaded guides, so Im hoping that the triple springs were done at the time for a good reason!

We shall see soon, its getting close to going in time!!

Strange I had my heads done by RoverTech, I think they was also called rover craft, I had big valves and ported heads, but they fitted double springs as per my 400SE heads.

on a side note you can get good power from fast road cam, with single springs and non cut pistons. about 200 BHP on a 3.9 LR engine.

Out of curiosity will a set of 4.6 heads fit on a 3.5 block without too much modification? And if so would there be any notable power increase?
