Hi all. Obviously this is a merc forum so I'm expecting some level of bias but would appreciate your honest thoughts if possible. I fancy getting a luxury cruiser for a daily driver and considering either an s or a8. For about. 30k I can get a 2011 s class or a slightly newer a8.

I've looked online for comparisons but unable to find anything useful other than YouTube driver reviews of the brand new models. What are your thoughts on how these cars compare? I like the look of the a8 and they both seem to have similar levels of technology, beyond that I'm a bit clueless!

You need to drive both.

I use an S class quite often & find it a sensational place to be, it's a CDi, & if it were my daily I think I would have it chipped as it seems to bog down sometimes pulling away from lights or needing that extra whack overtaking.

I know it has been very reliable & apart from regular servicing has only needed brake discs & pad, hardly surprising on something so heavy. I think the S is the highest VED rate & again I've no idea about the 8 but I do know the VAG engines on current A6 have lower VED than equivalent E class'

Not driven any sort of Audi in a few years but I stopped buying them (A6) about 7 years ago when the ride became too hard. Merc is 'Waft central' IMO. A8 may not be that bad though.

The S I use was an MB press car apparently so has an extremely high gadget count, TV, massage seats, mega stereo, pan roof, memory everything, radar cruise control, air con seats & a load of stuff I don't even understand! Again I'm not sure what sort of spec is standard in an 8 so I guess it's what's out there in either guise that has what you want.

I say again. Drive both then when you know which drives best for you decide the options you want & Bob is one of your parents brothers!!

Hope there is something useful in my post & enjoy the search & your final choice.

Very useful. Thanks so much for your thoughts. I need to drive both, and I really want adaptive cruise(!). It might just build down to aesthetics in the end - a8 is current gen and seems to have a sleeker look about it.
