Help with 6-speed gearbox oil-level check
Discussion
Hi,
I have a CSR200 with a 6-speed gearbox and would like to check/top-up the gearbox oil. Online, I've only found references to the 5-speed gearbox.
I'm something of a beginner regarding engine mechanics (compared to most of you :-) so please excuse any stupid questions...
Is the oil-filler plug in the same sort of position as on the 5-speed gearbox? Ie between the gearbox and the passenger footwell? If so, could someone tell me whereabouts it is? Say, in relation to the drain plug (ie how many millimeters back and up? :-)
I can't get to it or even see it from the top and don't have the facilities to get under the car. So I'd like to do the drilling through the footwell wall thing.

Thanks!
Having looked at the photos of the 5- and 6-speed gearboxes on the Caterham parts website, and not even being able to *find* the filler plug on the 6-speed (?), I guess I'll be trying to remove the top cover.
Regarding "easy peasy" — I'd agree if the gearbox were on a bench top. Unfortunately, it's still in the car and I only know about the rearmost two bolts from the Caterham pics :-) Perhaps they'll be easy to remove after I've bought a new socket wrench set (including a universal joint) tomorrow...
What should the height of the oil level be?

The back 2 bolts are by feel, though thats easier than it sounds. Go to halfords and get a set of the ratcheting spanners with the flex heads. Youve still got to get underneath to drain but you can check the level and top up from the top. With the top off you look down and you can see the filler plug in the side of the case, the oil should be up to that level. Now I can't stress this bit enough - don't drop anything in there when you are getting off/have off/putting back the top. Obviously when you use the drain plug the entrance of stuff back into the box is minimal but with the top off anything can find it's way in.
Don't attempt to fill from taking the gearbox cover off from the top, and do not do the drill through the tunnel either.get four axle stands and a trolley jack from Halfords, and get at the plug on the drivers side using a cut down 10mm Allen key from under the car..
Fill using a oil pump with a plastic neck, again from Halfords.
Use. GL4 oils from Caterham cars. That it.
It you want to drain it completely then the drain plug is on the passenger side next to the chassis hoop ie the lowest black powder coated bit of the frame.
Filling takes a little practice and hard work on the thumbs using the pump method, about an hour all in.

Has the CSR 200 got a panel underneath the propshaft like there is on the 260? If so, you may find it tight to get at the drain plug.
As viper blue said, don't drill through the side of the tunnel either as on the SV/CSR there is a chassis tube in the way.
If you get under the car with a good light you should be able to see it OK on the driver's side of the gearbox.
