Got abuse several times - was I driving rudely?

Situation: I was driving along the A41 through Ayelsbury (very nice piece of road btw) and made several overtakes on the inside a roundabout, got beeped/flashed/shouted at every time.

There's NSL single carriageways leading up to the roundabouts, split into 2 lanes at the roundabout, then merge back into one lane.

Am I doing something wrong by going down the right hand lane and overtaking at the roundabout? I got the moves done pretty quickly and it's not like I pushed them out wide or anything. The way I see it, there's 2 lanes at the roundabout and the driver on the left should be sticking to his lane rather than trying to cut across. They were also doing about 45-50mph on the NSL sections and would have been overtaken later anyway... Or do people just not like BMWs and convertibles around that area?

Of all the places to overtake, a roundabout is probably the least appropriate.

Some people take issue though, god knows why. Happned last night to me coming home from Devon. Some guy pulled out infront of me on a country lane and didn't go beyond 15 MPH then flashed at me when I overtook him.

In the case of a single carriageway, where the road opens up to 2 for a roundabout, the right hand lane is intended for turning right.

I don't think what you're doing is actually illegal, but it is a little bit rude and certainly not what you'd call defensive driving.

I don't see any issue with this at all as long as you're not massively aggressive. The way I view it is that if the other person doesn't have to alter their course then all is ok.

Are both lanes for straight on with the right one also allowing right turns?

Used to do this a lot while I was commuting, Sheffield to Newark down the A57. The only way I could get it over and done with inside of an hour was to go up the inside. The roundabouts I chose for this often had large queues in the left hand lane, which was for turning left or going straight on. The right hand lane was either for turning right or going straight on.

Seemed fair to me, why sit in a queue of people who're possibly going a different way for the sake of it

I suspect a lot of people in the left lane would straighline the roundabout. I wouldn't attempt this for that reason alone.

if you're driving a BMW/Audi you'll always attract abuse from a certain type.

I love the A71 Sighthill stretch in Edinburgh for this. It's Dual carriageway with double lane roundabouts every 5 or 6 hundred metres The left lane is bus lane but the roundabouts and 100m before and after them are unrestricted. Most drivers stay in the right hand lane and queue at every roundabout, but it is far quicker (and legal) to swap to the left lane as soon as it is no longer bus lane, Zap round the roundabout in the left lane passing several cars and timing to merge back into the right lane again before the bus lane starts. Even better on a Sunday when the bus lane isn't active but the sheep don't seem to notice this.

They haven't noticed you and you made them jump when you appeared next to them, then exit in front of them, they wish to let you know that you startled them.

Obviously I know it is slightly rude but the driver in the left lane should not be straightlining the roundabout anyway? Or at least check their mirrors to remove the element of surprise which I'm guessing was the main cause of their aggravation?

Which bit?
A lot of that stretch is dual carriageway anyway...although the bit leading out of Aylesbury (near McDonalds) does get a bit messy - some bits remain wide, but are single carriageway...ideal territory for BMW drivers to stamp their 'authority'.

OP - there's two lanes on to the roundabout, one (the right lane) to turn right and the other (the left lane) to turn left or go straight on. There's only a single lane off the roundabout straight ahead so no wonder drivers get peeved when you attempt to make two. That's how I see it and would drive it.
