Well that's what the Shaguar mailer I just received says Autocar Magazine seems to think...

"Autocar magazine recently put the F-TYPE R Coupé through its paces against a number of top vehicles from the Audi R8 to the Porsche 911 Turbo. This awe-inspiring quote was the result. From dynamic driving in all conditions to sheer excitement behind the wheel, find out for yourself why the F-TYPE is officially "one of the best cars on sale, period."

Maybe when they say "compelling" they mean it st the life out of our test driver and we haven't seen him since.

Thoughts?

Sorry, I had to shout it (CAPS) and Shag drivers don't get your cloth caps all twiddled - it's only a but of a larf wink

There are not many magazines that would imfluence my purchase decision and Autocar is among them.

I'm pleased to see Jaguar have made a compelling car. After all, it's engineered here in Britain, so something we can all be proud of.

My slight concern with the car is that the ones i see here in London have been the convertibles, usually in white and seem to be owned by the LOOK AT ME! sorts. So, you'd have to get over the old man jokes, then the small penis ones... (get enough of the latter in the Porker).

"The 991 Turbo is a fat ugly boat that nobody wants to be seen dead driving" would be my first thought closely followed by "Porsche need to fire the person(s) responsible and give us a Turbo car we can dream about".

Ever since the F type coupe was previewed I wondered if I had made a mistake with the turbo S I had just bought, don't get me wrong a sensational car in every way, except looks.

I removed V8 Vantage from the list due to it's performance/drive but the early reviews of the F type roadster convinced me this would not be the case with the coupe, and to my eyes at least the coupe is a stunning looker.

I saw one in the flesh recently and my initial reaction was OMG, it's fookin huge!!
One of the mags questioned "How can Jaguar make an aluminium two seat sports car heavier than Porsche can make a 2+2?" well.... I now get it.

That's not to say a 991 isn't also large.
I'm content in my choice of turbo S.

I agree.

The F-Type looks miles better in magazines than up close. There is no excuse for building a 2-seater that weighs the same as a 5 series!

I followed an F-Type convertible through the Wilmslow tunnels near the airport recently, sounded fantastic. It was so loud it drowned out my own car which is pretty load through there usually.

Does look huge though but it's one pretty car.

Bloke next door had one last week - I thought it was an XK on first glance? Wasn't blown away by the sound either.

the 991 Turbo's measured dimensions are one thing, how it actually looks in real life is another.

FUGLY.

Rear end of F type cab looks unresolved. Looks poor roof up as well. Magazines stated the Fiat Tipo sedicovalvo 16v wAs the best hot hatch you could buy circa 1990. Autocar also informed me the Elise had a "saloon car ride" I loved all my Elise's but the ride was not, ever comparable to a saloon car. Unless your saloon had broken springs or concrete wheels. I put little faith in the fickle and increasingly inconsistent reviews I read in the motoring press.

The Shaguar f type was at the hyermax bpg along with various other shags - I mean jags that the dealer had brought along for testing. .. And I mean testing - I managed to touch an indicated 185. The f types sound superb, look strikingly pretty and are not bad in the corners - we weren't allowed to drift, but full on cornering with squealling tyres was allowed wink. It's not to trackday standards, but on the public road it would be a right hoon.

They was a 991 turbo present which did not particularly look big, but compared to my 997.2 next to it, it's definitely grown.

If I was in the market for v8 two seater, this f type would be at the top of my list ... However it ain't a four seater and the boot is small.

Btw the 991 turbo is better in the flesh but not as good as a 997.2 IMHO - it's the quad exhausts, side air in takes and spoiler I have a problem with - and I not that impressed with Dvla v5 naming convention on the back either.

I agree that unfortunately the new Turbo (or S) is not an attractive car. The standard Carrera looks far better in my eyes.

As much as i like my 997TS, i would never buy a brand new one. For me, there's far more imaginative ways to spend £160k.

It is compared to the competition.

It is not cheap in the same way that an onion is cheap. It is cheap in the way that a £2 million house in Kensington is cheap.

Turbos have always been expensive but you get what you pay for.

997 turbo spec used to max at around £150k, would not surprise me if you could get a 991 turbo spec to £180k if you went bespoke.

Nice try apolo but I am having none of it, Porsche made a mistake with this car and most of th 991 range. Performance might be stellar but speed is not the only factor, especially now we are in the range of 'fast enough' for most people.

Porsche need to flog over 600 of these blimps per year, every year to match the 997s sales. Can't see it myself but stranger things have happened.
