Omega Planet Ocean or Speedmaster Mark II
Discussion
For the last decade I have been dreaming of having an Omega Seamaster, 5 years ago I got engaged and have been dropping not so subtle hints about wanting one. My darling wife has been carefully saving for the last few years and I have enough for a nice watch.
Having looked a bit more seriously recently I'm down to either the plain, steel on steel 42mm planet ocean or the new Speedmaster Mark II with the racing dial. I would love either on my arm but I need to be certain about what to buy before spending 3k (I can get a 25% discount on list).
I want something that I can still be proud to wear in 10 or 20 years (I think my wife would kill me if I sold it) so a relatively timeless design is important and it will be to some extent my daily. I appreciate that watches are a personal thing but opinions would be appreciated.

I've got a black bezel PO, great watch, but if I was buying again it would be a 2nd hand one of these:

Mate bought one for £2.5k a while ago (after I told him it was my grail watch, b***ard)

The reissued MKII is an update to a 40+ year old beauty, so the classic heritage is already embedded. It'll still be cool in 10 years time.

Can't say the same about the PO (although it's still none too shabby).
Can't say I'd like to look at that watch for the next ten weeks never mind the next ten years!!!

The speedmaster above however....now that looks very cool..... My money would go on one of those...
Sure it looks cool... right now. When the 70s became the 80s and 90s, I'm sure you couldn't give them away! Right now 70s pieces are 'cool', in 10-20 years, who knows. The simpler and more timeless the design, the better.
The modern Omega that does it for me right now is the Aqua Terra 150m with blue dial. In terms of wearability and utility, there is nothing that watch can't be used or worn for (apart from diving over 150m, natch).

Maybe the black-dial new Mark II is the compromise?
A good shout! But it still looks dated/dateable to me.I'm wearing a 70s Omega right now and wore a 70s Heuer Silverstone for a week at Le Mans... but I wear that 'vintage style' becase I want to wear a vintage looking watch. For an everyday piece for ever... I'd want something traditional. But that's just me

Thanks for all the replies, a mixed response suggests I'm not mad for sitting on the fence.
A good idea about going for the black speedmaster mark II but it just doesn't go anything for me having tried it on along with the PO yesterday. The other challenge I'm having is actually finding a racing dial to look at, nowhere relatively local I've tried has one in stock and the chain I can get 25% through aren't proving brilliant about getting one in.
Unless the racing dial really wows me I think it's going to be a PO but I want to see one first to be sure so I can avoid the moment of regret when I see one in the future.

Definitely the Planet Ocean. I choose the classic (black bezel) 42mm version for my 21st, 5 years ago.Its a very versatile watch and goes with anything. Is this your first decent watch? (that version of the speedy isnt as versatile as the PO)
I have an automatic Seiko Premier at the moment so yes this is my first decent watch but I will continue wearing the Seiko. I see your point about versatility and it's something I'm mindful but I tend to my my watch to the left of my quite pronounced wrist bone bump so it's well hidden under cuffs and doesn't slip down.Gassing Station | Watches | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
