new windscreen and insurance
Discussion
Tonight my M5 decided to break its screen.
I've put a claim in for a new screen, but I'm now a little concerned.
Will it affect my NCB? Some people say yes, some say no.
Also, auto glass will be fitting it. Should this concern me? Should I request a proper BMW windscreen? Will it matter?
I need the screen replaced asap as the 6" square crack is right in my eye line, and I'm meant to be going away this weekend! I doubt BMW would have a screen in anyway mind!

Replacing a windscreen has never affected my NCB, usually there is an excess to pay (£80? Now). Autoglass would have a lot more experience of changing screens than a BMW garage so I wouldn't be too concerned about workmanship.
£70 for mine so not too bad. Apparently some BMW techs are trained, but who knows?I just hope I get the guy who has done loads of E39s.
Thanks

You will need to declare you made a claim next time you renew your insurance.
Never have and never will unless asked and that's never happened.TwigtheWonderkid said:
You've never been asked if you've made any claims in the last 3 years??? Seems very strange. Unless you've taken the unilateral decision that windscreen claims don't count, unless they ask you specifically about windscreen claims. Which would be equally as strange.
This seems to be a common misconception, that a claiming for a windscreen does not count as a claim. Glassman said:

Spoke with the insurance company this morning - As long as I use Autoglass then I do not lose any NCB...
..but if you don't, you will?OEM glass is best, but more importantly, it's the fitting.

That would be an unfare trading practice then?
An experienced glass fitter (not just Autoglass) would generally do a better job (although not always, some just don't care). You pay to insure a BMW, not a BMW ChanLee hybrid, use genuine glass if possible, if Autoglass try to fit a Shatterpruf windscreen tell them to f
k right off, you really don't want one of those in your car.People are obsessed with NCB (some insurers will freeze it for a glass claim). It's easy to see if they've reduced your NCB but what about your premium? Has anyone ever been told how much the premium would have been if they hadn't had a glass claim?
More than one way to skin a cat.
Some have experienced increased wind noise and other issues on the E39 after windscreen replacement. There's a load of stuff over on M5board about this, apparently there's a BMW procedure for replacing the glass involving correct spacers, an alignment tool and pre-tensioning the top of the windscreen. It's here:

Had a replacement windscreen on my Golf.
Not a genuine one but Autoglass man fitted it... no wind noise, although they don't clean the glass well at all, inside it would steam up quite horribly so needed a good clean... after that though, was fine.
Did not effect my NCB, as I checked with my insurers beforehand. £75 excess though.
