Hi All

Has anyone had their Wedge (or perhaps other) gearbox reconditioned recently? Can anyone recommend places to get this done and approx costs?

I think the input shaft bearing may be starting to go and would rather catch it sooner rather than later.

Alternatively, has onyone bought an 'off the shelf' recon gearbox and is able to recommend the supplier?

Hi Adi,

I just but them off the flea and check them over, much cheaper than a rebuild.
Sometimes you can get ones that people have had rebuilt at a very reasonable price.

Aim for a late suffix - G or F - on the serial number.

When you say 'check them over' what do you mean?

I have stripped a gearbox before and I could replace the input bearing without too much trouble, but I couldn't claim to be enough of an expert to know if anything else is wearing beyond doing a visual check.

Because it'll be a bit of a palava replacing the box I only want to do it once (if at all possible!!)

Put in gear and run the input shaft off an electric drill. Repeat for each gear. Listen for noises.

While in gear check for backlash. Check input and output for wobbly shafts (oooh err).

Drain all the oil and replace with Mobil 1 after a "flushing cleanout".

There's only so much you can do so but even rebuilt boxes can fail so it's a matter of time/money for repeated refitting versus money for rebuilding.

there is a chap near me (Bromsgrove way) he also advertises on ebay from time to time, he'll rebuild the box and linkage for £375 which I didn't think was too bad

Adi, Ashcroft transmissions are the go to guys for LT77 rebuilds. Tis about £400 if i remember correctly, they also do the full rebuild kit for ~£150ish if you fancy a bash yourself.

Is there any difference between the Land Rover Gearbox and that fitted to the 350i, such as ratios or anything else.

The other thing I noticed is that some of the pictures of the Land Rover show what must be the extra outputs for the 4WD aspect of the box. Presumably these bits just unbolt and get replaced by covers or other bits off my box?

Yes you have the transfer box bits and probably a different selector linkage.

The output shaft is definitely radically different as is the back cover.

I think you would be talking a lot of work and instead of doing this you would be better off engineering an LR R380 box to fit. This is a little project I am embarking on as soon as I can pick up a box locally. Cheap.

I think I might be biting off more than I can chew if I tried to put a different box in!

I have had a good look on Ebay and nearly all the boxes on there are Land Rover boxes with different linkages and often with the transfer box. So I think the most straight forward way to approach this is to get my gearbox refurbished by someone reputable.

If anyone else has any suggestions that would be appreciated so that I have a comparison. Ideally somewhere not so far from West Sussex, but not totally critical!

Hi Adi

Hope all going well

I had my gearbox reconditioned when I lost 3rd gear on the way to Wedge Fest 2013
I used my local members and friends who look after many Wedges and West Yorkshire TVRs at Aeromotive in Leeds

They sent it somewhere local (Batley I think) and I am sure they charged me £350 for the recon
inc replacing the worn selector as well as 3rd gear & sychromesh as the synchro had split totally from the gear causing the problem
I now have the part in my Motorbilia section in my office!!!!

Call Phil Haigh (Aeromotive & SEAC owner) on 01924 422200 and I am sure he will advice you where he send it
A fantastic job done in just a few days and the gearbox and clutch are now great and easy to use

(Phil also replaced the clutch at the same time while the gearbox was out for about £110 parts)

Used these guys http://www.gearboxman.co.uk/index.html a few years ago for the rebuild of a T5 and the Jag LSD. Did a great job, the price was what they said it would be and ready when they said it would be. Both have been in the car for a few years now and not had any issues. Cheers Steve.

Hi Trickie

Thanks for the info. I will give him a call when the time comes. The only thing that might be awkward is the distance.

Just of to the Le Mans Classic next week in the Wedge and went down to the 24hr the week before last. So the car's going fine. The gearbox issue atthe moment is minor but will certainly need seeing to over the winter at the latest I would think.

I trust yours is going well.

Personally, I wouldn't risk a long journey in it until you've got it fixed - you may do more damage! driving

I hope that helps!! smile

Unfortunately the 400 had a problem and just cut out a few weeks ago when I was in France (not Le Mans unfortunately)

It is now back in Blighty and I am very thankful that my RH Insurance policy included European Assistance

MY ADVICE TO EVERYONE HERE IS: - DON'T SET OFF WITHOUT GOOD COVER

I was given a French hire car to Calais, Ferry to Dover (my Eurotunnel return ticket couldn't be used as foot passengers)
and another English rental car to get home to Yorkshire - and various taxis before the rental car.
My car was then transported back to my nominated garage (Phil at Aeromotive)
All this was covered by the excellent and professional European Assistance

It is now suspected that just the Petrol pump was the culprit and shouldn't cost too much to fix.

Hope you have a good safe trip

Cheers
Trickie

Ooh, that's a pain.

Nice to hear a good story about insurance back up though. Especially as I am with RH too.
